I did a search but didn't find my exact problem.

XP SP2, Dell desktop, going on 8 years old.

Installed a new Printer a month before the problem. I installed a new version of Spybol 2 days before the problem began.

Computer was working great, I was viewing my pictures on the HD. Then it locks up and I get the Blue screen with the info below.

When I power on the computer, the Dell logo page loads. I can't go to F8, so I can't start in safe mode or Start in last known good confederation. Only option is F2 or F12 on the logo page.
    After BIOS loads...
    Next screen reads only this:
Clicking F1 does nothing, excepts repeats "Strike F1 to reboot" I can go to F2.

I also tried starting with the Windows XP install Disk. It said it was starting Windows but after a minute or so I got the same page blue page as above with the same info.

Tried to check RAM. I have 2 banks of 258 RAM. Removed one at a time but with one out or either out the screen stayed black? Can't even get BIOS to load with one RAM removed? It's my understanding that XP should start with 128 RAM.... or at least get BIOS. But must not be true for the way my RAM is setup.

In F2 setup, I changed boot First to the CDROM instead of the hard drive so it would start with the Windows CD.

Lets say, I'm dead in the road.

    Appreciate help.

Hi arkie. Take a look at this link, Troubleshooting Stop Error Messages. Scroll down until you find information on the PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA error you are getting. Click on some of the links where you will get redirected on how to troubleshoot the issue.

Your Welcome. Follow Aries instructions to test the harddrive and post back with the results.

Evan, lots of those suggestions are for computers that one can, run scandsk, start in safe mode, boot in last know good configuration, none of those are an option for me. I didn't find anything that I fit my problem. But it's probably there somewhere.

    Western Digital

Arie, I can't get to the above site but found the instructions HERE.
It says go to the same url as you posted to download but it takes me to their products page. I'll need the bootable version so I can make a CD for the Dell.

Do you know another site that I can download the bootable version of Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for DOS?

    I have a Western Digital WD400.

I can also try a HD repair. Both the Diagnostics and repair warns to back up data of which I can't do.

Question... which do you believe there is less chance to lose data on the HD?

Not into a game of chance, but it is likely a repair may have a slightly larger chance of something going pear-shaped.

I ran the Diagnostics and got this:
    Smart Error
    Error/Status Code:0159
    Hit any key to continue.

I checked the error code at WD.
    'The drive is defective. Replace.'

If I installed a new HD, run the faulty drive as a slave.. would I be able to open the slave to recover items?

That will depend on what the severity of the disk fault is, but it is worth a try.

    Asking for your opinion.

After reading below would you think, the drive is toasted completely? And means no recovery of anything on the drive.

    1. I tried to reinstall Windows.
After searching for previous versions of Windows, it showed the size of the drive but said it wasn't available.

    2. Anytime I hit F1 I can hear the drive click.

I have ordered a new drive.

    Thanks

Yes, I'm pretty sure it is toast.
