I have been unable to add original MIDI files to WMP. I assume because there is no Media Information. How do I get WMP to add the files?

I thought MIDI stood for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. I dont believe that its an actual music file. For example, my guitar is hooked to my computer through a Cakewalk MIDI interface device. Cakewalk software is used to convert the MIDI signal to something the computer can understand.

Please correct me if I'm wrong

WMP plays MIDI files quite well, but because these are original files (sans Media Information) Media Player Library will not store them even after playing. So I cannot do a search for a MIDI file in WMP

    Thanks,
I really think it is a tag/media information problem
The files play fine, they just don't get stored in the library, making a search more difficult

    Hi dscrogg,

I take it that clicking + Add to Library doesn't work? Or clicking the down arrow and clicking "add folder" and pointing it to the folder where your music is doesn't work?

Can you manually add the files?

    No
    I've tried.
Nor will it let me edit tag/media info.
I wonder how people who write their own music in MIDI organize their library for easy retrieval
    Thanks again

There's a ton of free media players out there. How 'bout trying one to see if you can get your music to behave?

By the by, which WMP version are you running? Service Pack?

My Cakewalk Music Creator lets me store it, retrive it, adjust it and modify it. But I've always converted MIDI files to MP3 before playing it with Windows Media Player.

And thanks for the info, I didn't know WMP would play MIDI files. I'll check it out later when I get a chance.

By the way iTunes handles these tunes nicely
What I like about WMP is it will slow down any song in any format to up to half speed with no pitch change. This lets me learn how to play the song

    Hi dscrogg,

Has this been happening all along, or since the update to 11?

Just as an experiment, I changed one of my .midi files to .wav and it played just fine and I was able to add it. However, I'm using v.10.
