[Resolved] Cmd.exe and Regedit.exe crash Explorer, Google re-directs

Hi.

A combination of symptoms lead me to suspect infection, but I have been unable to remove or restore to normal system operation. Basic symptoms include i) any use of cmd.exe appears to cause Explorer to crash and restart (desktop goes blank, then system tray, task tray, etc. are slowly rebuilt...), ii) attempts to use regedit cause the same behavior as cmd.exe, iii) I get sporadic re-directs when browsing, ~25% of links don't go where they 'should', iv) several security websites are blocked and cannot be accessed (i.e. www.mcafee.com).

History:
1) I have OfficeScan installed. During real-time scanning, it detected "PAK_GENERIC.001" in a single 'offending' Internet temporary file. This was the initial manifestation of problems.
2) Upon inspection in Windows Explorer, the offending file was no longer found. I subsequently ran a complete manual scan using OfficeScan (all virus definitions up to date) and was given a clean bill of health.
3) Thinking this strange, I then ran Malwarebytes. This program also gave my PC a clean bill of health.
4) One day later, I began to notice the symptoms noted above. Sadly, I did not take immediate action.
5) 7-10 days later, I no longer was able to access any network server or print resources on my LAN. This condition only occurs from the "problem PC ". Panic begins to set in.
6) Ran the Kaspersky Online scanning tool. One item was found, referred to in their logfile as "Trojan.Win32.Small.aarn" and associated with the file "C:\Documents and Settings\fsmithkc.PT-DOMAIN1\Local Settings\vxr.ffb ". Attempts to manually remove this file fails, as it regenerates.
7) Tried to find online removal tools for this Trojan; did not find any. Most tools I did come across req'd command line execution anyways...which is not possible given my symptoms.
8) Found a post on WindowBBS by member CFSZero (posted 3 weeks ago) that looks nearly identical to my own problems. I have followed *some* of the initial steps provided for his infection, and have provided the associated logs that were generated.

Current state:
a) Unable to run dds.scr. This extension is registered on my system as an AutoCAD scripting file, and I can't seem to change this association (I've tried; ".SCR" doesn't appear as a registered extension in 'Tools | Options | File Types' in Windows Explorer as I'd expect). Does nothing but open in Notepad...Suggestion welcome.
b) I have run Hijack and have a log file and startuplist files available.
c) I have run OTMoveIt.exe using the parameters supplied in CFSZero's aforementioned post by member 'Juliet'. Log file is available.
d) I have run a RegQuery on [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32]" --- also as suggested by 'Juliet'. Log file available.

Generated log files noted in b), c), and d) are pasted below. I SINCERELY thank any and all for whatever assistance they can provide to resolve this problem.

Regards,

FKC

Hi and welcome, sorry for the delay.

Print this topic or save to notepad, it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps as we will need to close all windows that are open later in the fix.

Next, launch Notepad, (Start > Run, type in: notepad) copy and paste just the text in blue below in it(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32]
"aux4 "= "wdmaud.drv "

Save this as fix.reg and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop. It should look like this: [IMG]
Double-click on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click "Yes" or "OK ". You should receive a message that it was successful. You may delete the file afterwards

Open hijackthis, click 'config' (bottom right)
Choose the tab 'misc Tools' on top.
Choose 'delete a file on reboot'
In the field, copy and paste next:

C:\WINDOWS\vxr.ffb

Click open.
Hijackthis will tell you that this file will be deleted on next reboot and if you want to reboot now. Click Yes/ok
Your system should reboot now.

verify the C:\WINDOWS\vxr.ffb is gone after reboot.

NEXT**
Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

Please allow ComboFix to install, if needed, Windows Recovery Console. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

No Validation is Required.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

** Please Note:
At times ComboFix may appear to stall, please be patient.
• When finished, it will produce a report for you.
• Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a HijackThis log so we can continue cleaning the system.

Please only run the tool once, ty.

Extra note: After you have installed the Recovery Console - if you reboot your computer, right after reboot, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well.
Don't select to run the Recovery Console as we don't need it.
By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows.

You may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.

As requested.

Hi again, and thanks for your efforts!

1) The suggested fix using the .reg file was apparently successful. I now have access to cmd.exe and regedit again. Thanks.
2) Similarly, use of Hijack to delete the unwanted file was also successful.
3) My ComboFix log is below. I will post my second Hijack log in a subseqent reply to this thread.

Cheers!!

Welcome back....looking better.

One file I found that looks suspicious since running from a temp directory, we need to have scanned.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading:
• Select - Show hidden files and folders.
• Uncheck- Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
• Also, make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types.
• Click OK. (Remember to Hide files and folders once done)

Please go to: VirusTotal

• [IMG]

• Click the Browse button and search for the following file: c:\windows\Temp\MQ1DBB.EXE
• Click Open
• Then click Send File
• Please be patient while the file is scanned.
• Once the scan results appear, please provide them in your next reply.
If it says already scanned -- click "reanalyze now "

Recent security alerts tell us we need to get Adobe updated to close a security vulnerability.

Your version of Adobe is out of date.

You can obtain the latest version of Adobe Reader from here, and the latest version of Flash Player from here.
For more information and links to Adobe updates and downloads click here.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune From Here and save it to your Desktop.
Follow the instructions for the browser you use.
Read the instructions about the cookies. Delete what you do not need.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Java Cache
The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check "Select All ".
Finally click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning " message, click OK.
If you use the Firefox or Opera browsers, you can use this program
as a quick way to tidy those up as well.
When you have finished, click on the Exit button in the Main menu.
========================
NEXT**
I'd like for you to run this next online scan to check for remnants or anything that might be hidden.
The below scan can take up to an hour or longer, please be patient.
*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.
Using Internet Explorer, visit http://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400
Other available links
Kaspersky Online Scanner or from here
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
• The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition
files.
• After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
• This will start the program and scan your system.
• The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
* Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
* Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
* Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
• Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select:
Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in
your reply.
Update May 19th
Hi Juliet,
So, things are indeed looking better. I have network access again to my LAN, and as noted previously cmd.exe and regedit are back working again. I haven't been browsing with this PC enough to know if all previous issues there are resolved, but can again reach [for example] www.mcafee.com which was previously blocked.
Per your suggestions:
1) The .exe file you mentioned in my \temp directory appears to be rename and/or re-created each time I boot my computer -- using a different random filename each time. The .exe self-describes in File | Properties as a component 'OfcDog' that appears to be part of the Trend Micro OfficeScan client. Submission of this .exe to VirusTotal came back with a clean bill of health. Please let me know if this file is still of interest (?)
2) Adobe components are updated. Thanks.
3) Performed a 'full' ATFCleaner run.
4) Kaspersky came back clean as well, apart from noting 2 threats associated with installation of CrossLoop. Log is attached below.
5) A new Hijack log follows below the Kaspersky log file.
Things are certainly looking better, and I welcome any additional suggetions you may have to offer. Thanks again.
Welcome back
No, I can see it's not malicious now and I thank you for your research in finding out what it was related to.
As for what Kaspersky found, not a worry unless you don't use or didn't downloaded the software.
Is considered a security risk since it could be used in a malicious way.
Open HijackThis, Click Do a system scan only, checkmark these. Then close all other windows and browsers except HijackThis and press fix checked.
The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but we suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] \ "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe\ "
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe "
(Not needed)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] \ "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe\ "
(Description: Adobe reader startup - unnecessarily uses system resources.)
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
(Description: Microsoft Office Startup Assistant. This program loads some Microsoft Office components into memory, even if you're not currently using MS Office. Removing this unnecessary program will free up a considerable amount of system resources. )
Now reboot your computer to set the registry.
Don't miss or skip this next step, this will remove malicious files from quarantine and set a clean restore point.
• Click START then RUN
• Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the x and the /u, it needs to be there.
Example below
You can delete/uninstall any other tools I had you download and use earlier.
Nearly there.
Hi once again Juliet,
I was feeling pretty good, seeing the end of the tunnel -- and then I got sloppy. Gah! You suggested below:
>> Click START then RUN
>> Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the x and the /u, it needs to be there.
Before I performed this step, I had already moved my Desktop copy of combofix named "Combo-Fix.exe" to a subfolder for 'storage' --- thinking it might be a good thing to keep around...
Unfortunately, this meant [I'm guessing] that when I ran "Combofix /u" the process didn't quite run to completion --- giving a warning/failure message of "unable to rename Combofix to ~~C..." (or similar). Seems like Combofix knew where it was 'supposed to be' for this cleanup step.
Subsequent attempts to run "combofix /u" with 'Combo-fix.exe' in the original location fails, due to the standard "Windows cannot find 'combofix'. Make sure you typed.... " message.
Any help to finish cleaning me up would be great!! I can see that still have a C:\Qoobox folder of Combofix goodies sitting off my C-drive, as well as a C:\_OTMoveIT folder. Can these just be removed? Any suggestions for how to create a proper restore point...now that I messed up the automatic ComboFix way??
Thanks again, and thanks for your other suggestions. This is the first I've heard of the NoScript plug-in for Firefox --- and that will be one of the first things I install on here tomorrow.
cheers,
fkc
P.S. Any idea what the offending infection was in the end? Just curious. Thx.
Actually this infection does have a name.
And it was possible once it was on the computer it brought in a couple other little nasty critters, not out of the ordinary.
Trojan.Daonol-Downadup (Confiker)
A writeup about this infection can be found
http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/10/fake-sysaudiosys-causes-searchengine.html
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We can manually remove those ComboFix files/folders.

C:\qoobox\quarantined_files.txt <-- is this file present? If so -- delete
C:\ComboFix <--this folder can be deleted
c:\Combofix\combofix.txt <--this file can be deleted

Any other ComboFix files you find can be deleted as well.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NEXT**
Go to Start >> Run - type control sysdm.cpl,,4 & press Enter
* Tick on the checkbox - Turn off System Restore on all drives
* Click Apply
Turn it back 'On' by unticking the same checkbox & click OK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

NEXT**
Next open OTMoveIt, then click on "CleanUp! ". If you receive a warning from your Firewall please allow...
In the left pane, it will display a list of tools and other related files which you may have downloaded/used during our cleanup + backup folders that were created with the bad files present. They are not needed anymore, so OTMoveIt will delete them.
Do not edit anything in that Window!
Don't worry if it displays some tools you didn't download/use.
Click Yes when it asks to Begin cleanup process.

Then reboot your computer.
