I have a problem playing some discs in the drive. It reads and opens normal type cd's,plays music and videos etc. DVD's can be played also.
However when I burn a movie file (say a .mwv one) from my hard drive to a dvd using the drive, the burnt disc wil not open on my pc. It freezes. It can be played on other pc's quite well, but not mine.
A check on the properties box for the drive tell me that it is a "ATAPI DVD A DH16A1L "
Could it need a new driver? and if so where do I download one from?

I doubt it is a driver problem as the drive otherwise performs OK, but you can check by removing the drive in Device Manager and rebooting to allow Windows to detect and reinstall.

It is more likely to be a codec problem on your computer - run a codec check and see if it comes up with anything. I've not used this piece of software, but the author/source is reliable .....

    SHERLOCK - The Codec Detective

What software do you use to play DVD's?

Pete, I have used SHERLOCK and it performed quite well... I used it to do a check on the new XP box and results were as I had expected.

Install the latest K-Lite Codec pack. Seems to sort those sorts of problems out real quick. Google is your friend.

Thank you all for your assistance. The drive is now not recognising or playing ANY dvd's. It will play cd's and installation discs but not DVD's.
As for the software that i am using, well, this pc originally came with Vista as the Op system. I formatted the hard drive and installed XP. I downloaded Nero and was using this to read , burn dvd's etc quite succesfully, until it decide to stop responding.

I had a similar experience with a Samsung drive a couple of years ago, it turned out to be the drive. Before you run out and buy a drive, uninstall and then reinstall what ever software you use to play DVD's.

See if it can see the DVD now?

I agree, most likely, the drive is going south...
