Running Windows XP home edition SP3 (I think) on a Dell.

Computer seemed to be working fine. I switched from my log in to my wife's and hers looked like it was in some sort of safe mode (large distorted icons with less colors, etc). I rebooted and it went through the system scan where it checks the hard drive, etc. Then I rebooted and it came up with a black screen with just the mouse icon in the middle. There was nothing else on the screen. Everytime I reboot it gives me the option of booting in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with dos prompt, or boot with last good configuration. It does not matter what I choose, it boots up with just the black screen and the mouse icon. In safe mode it does have "Safe Mode Microsoft Windows....." up at the top of the screen and "Safe Mode" in the bottom corners, but that's it.

    Any ideas?

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)
Dell Diagnostics or chkdsk? If not DD do you have the option to run this when you boot up?

I suspect a problem with the hard drive - if you can determine the make run the manufacturer's disk diagnostic software .....

    Disk Diagnostic Software ....

    ExcelStore

    Hitachi/IBM

    Samsung

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum

    Western Digital

    chkdsk

I have a Western Digital hard drive and also have the "Data Lifeguard Tools" CD that came with it. When I boot from this CD, it says...

    1. FD 1.44 MB system type -(00)
    starting Caldera DR-Dos

    Singe stepping configuration files...
    install =A:\xman.exe [Y,N,R]?

Am I on the right track???

I do not think I have the Dell Diagnostics available when I boot up.

Can't be sure - I don't have any WD drives, but for SATA/PATA drives see here for instructions on the use of Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for DOS .....
