    Hello everyone,

Sorry if I may sound like a complete beginner,
but I have this serious problem for some days now.

Let me first tell that I took a partition backup 5 days ago
(using ShadowProtect Desktop). I took a Full backup, and
thereby, to save HD space, stupidly removed all the older backups.

The problem is, I see now, I took this backup AFTER I installed some application
(Startup Delayer) whih seemed to have changed some vital windows components (as I saw in my installtion monitor Total Uninstall).

It dumped some other versions in Windows/system32 of the following 2 files :

    - Comdlg32.ocx
    - MSCOMCTL.OCX

Since then I have these irritating mouse misbehaviours, being :

    - Erratic reaction every few minutes where it doesn't react at all for a couple of seconds.
    - Erratic rightclick behaviours, for example, leftclicking + drag (to select some text), it seems to loose and retake the leftclick action, resulting in dragged selection losing focus and retaking focus somewhere half inbetween what was currently selected.
    - Erratic leftclick DRAG, especially seen in my Browser (Firefox 3.0.0.10). I leftclick to select some tab, and drag it towards my bookmarks sidebar, and mostly it just looses the drag halfway inbetween, so I have to retry again and again.

    (Mouse = Cordless Logitech )
I re-installed mouse drivers, but no change.
I removed the mouse from Hardware Manager, and let the OS re-detect it, drivers installed correctly, but erratic behaviour is still there.

Also like to point out that Hardware Manager show no faulty or erratic devices, but it seems the OS must be struggling with these faulty files.

Also would like to point out that I have a second boot partition with Vista Home installed, and there the mouse works completely perfect, so a hardware problem is not the case either.

Other problems I experience since lately, allthough this happens at random, rightclicking some icons on the desktop to bring their properties etc, makes my whole system stall for eternally, I can only do CTRL-ALT-DEL to kill explorer.exe, and to restart explorer.exe. Problems also when I want to save some page from f.e. Firefox, the Save As... dialog makes my whole system crawl extremely, mostly I can do no other than killing firefox from the task manager too, which doesn't seem quite healthy for my system stability.

Avira AntiVir Premium doesn't find any malware/virus.
    MalwareBytes AM doesn't either.

If someone could point me to what the problem could be ?
I also would like to know if there's some magical MD5 checksum database somewhere with the the latest (or default) correct hashes of those files please ?

    Thanks for any help.

    Kind Regards,
    Jille L.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

If you have a full XP install CD of the same Service Pack as the OS installed on the computer run the System File Checker ....

Start > Run > sfc /scannow > Enter - note the space and have the CD handy.

If you don't have the appropriate CD consider running System Restore to a point prior to installing the software.

    Thanks a lot Pete !

I created a slipstreamed XP CD with SP3 integrated (instructions found here on the forum) and did a sfc /scannow

It replaced a whole lot of files, but it doesn't seem to have any effect on my problems. Guess it's a combination of files and registry misconfigurations, and I think a whole new reformat is all that's left, ****, I use this install for like 10 years, and starting from bare zero is a real shame.:(
