I have a K7VTA3 mobo, 40g 7200 rpm HD and, an AMD Athlon 2100 mz. I have installed a HP cd rewritter plus 8200i and the pc will not let it read or write. Would it be completely incompatable?I have tried other rewritter programs including Nero and it still won't work. It will run on my other pc so I know that its good. Any ideas is welcome I will try them all . Thanks Ed

I am running win 98se . It does run in another computer. Would having DDR ram have anything to do with it? I am pulling at strings.

Your ddr ram is just memory & has no bearing on your hardware devices. Can you SEE the writer in devicemanager? Does the cd-writer view cd's ok? Does windows SEE the writer in windows explorer? :)

In device manager it shows this devive working properly. When I put a cd in it give the message not ready reading cd abort, retry, cancel. It does not have anything else to show.

I am looking for the darn vbs registry file that corrects this prob! For winxp this fix is evrywhere you want to be. In the mean time what is the firmware ver:? I just checked HP & BTW this model works in all win ver:
    1. Right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
    2. Scroll down to Properties.
    3. Click the Device Manager tab.
    4. Click the Plus (+) sign next to CDROM
    5. Double-click the HP CD-Writer drive
    6. Click the Settings tab to display information about the HP CD-Writer drive, including the firmware version.
Ah.......has the HP riter EVER worked in this box? If so you may want to try a scanreg /restore at the dos level

the film ware ver. is 1.0f and it has always worked like it should until I installed in new pc . I could not see why it shouldn't work. I have everything set to auto and pc does see it and says it working properly but still won't read a cd. I am reformating the drive and then try to reinstall with everything anew.I just hope it will read the os cd .

That's prolly for the best as the only reason for not funtioning is a corrupted line in the registry & dang if i can find the rite one, sorry! Have ya thought about going to winxp? Putting aside all the hoopla over WPA, it's still the best widows OS going.

Bummer, can not finner that one out unless hp riter no good period. One thing for sure it wasn't the registry huh? When you boot up does the bios see the cdrom? Those ide cables can be tricky sometimes what with these new ATA/100 master slave cable select options + jumpers on the device it's self:)
