Hello, first of all I bought my Dell Laptop Latitude D610 used on-line I have no recovery disks for it but I did install my Windows XP on it and upgraded to Office Porfessional Edition 2003. It was a Dell refurbished machine by a Dell trained factory technician.

In January, I had a kitten chew on my power cord and I purchased a off brand power cord. The power cord was not up to par and I have been babying it along and if you bump the ac adaptor it will shut my laptop off with no warning. Oh, because it was an off brand my laptop didn't recognize it and it wouldn't charge my battery.

Well, I believe that because the computer has shut off so many times I got the following error message:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragamentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

    Technical Information:
    ***STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x82C828C8, 0xc0000102, 0x00000000)

I can not restart my computer in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, or with my last working configuration.

I do not know how to disable or unistall any of the stuff they have asked me to I don't know how to do the CHKDSK /F or even get to DOS.

I'm not worried about losing anything on my computer. It is still new enough to me that I have everything on a flash drive from my previous computer.

I truly do not think I have anything wrong with my computer I believe it is just because it has been accidently shut off so many times. I also have a authentic Dell AC adaptor coming in the mail either 5/15/09 or 5/18/09.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you so much. Jolene

Hi Jolene, welcome to WindowsBBS :D

Your HD has become corrupted in some way possibly due to

XP Systems aren't too happy with that happening often.

Do you have the XP installation CD? If so follow the instructions here to run chkdsk.

    Hi wildfire,
I can't seem to see explicit instructions in your link.

    I will add this
Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console for advanced users

It is not that difficult to run CHKDSK. Just boot to the Win XP CD, select R to go to the repair console, at the command prompt (flashing cursor) type
    chkdsk /r
    (note the space)
and press Enter. According to those instructions, to run a scan of the C: drive, enter
    chkdsk C: /r

Jolene, I suggest using the /r switch, but if that works there may be physical damage on the disk surface and it may come back in the future (and get progressively worse), that means the disk surface of the drive has been damaged and the hard disk drive needs to be replaced. Damage to the disk surface may have been suffered when the kitten chewed through the power cable (?) BTW, how is the Kentucky Fried Kitten? :D

If you are happy to "wipe" everything on the HDD and start again, find instructions supplied with the machine or find the instructions at Dell
    http://support.dell.com/support/top...support_central?~ck=ln&c=us&l=en&lnki=0&s=gen
You should be able to use the Service Tag number.

Try those suggestions. You don't have any important data on the HDD. It's a good opportunity to improve your experience level.
