[Resolved] Google redirect and no access to antivirus updates

Last week I began having google search result that often took me to a seemingly random page, usually a page trying to sell some kind of security software. It was a different place every time.

I have tried several tools, such as AVG free, MalwareBytes, spybot, ccleaner, spyware terminator. All find a few little things that can be removed, but the problems remain. All of my attempts seem to be blocked. For example, AVG doesn't update and Malwarebytes doesn't update. Could not access anything online to do updates manually so I unplugged from internet.

Tried to run DDS but the window only flashes briefly with no log files resulting.
I didnt know what else to do other than run hijackthis. So here it is below.
Thanks for your help!!

Hi and welcome

Open HijackThis, Click Do a system scan only, checkmark these. Then close all other windows and browsers except HijackThis and press fix checked.

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\Run: [mohopafimi] Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\vabuyoyi.dll ",s (User 'LOCAL SERVICE')
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\Run: [mohopafimi] Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\vabuyoyi.dll ",s (User 'NETWORK SERVICE')
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\PROGRA~1\Google\GOOGLE~2\GOEC62~1.DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\toraheke.dll c:\windows\system32\kapigagi.dll

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading:
• Select - Show hidden files and folders.
• Uncheck- Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
• Also, make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types.
• Click OK. (Remember to Hide files and folders once done)

Using Windows Explorer (right-click your "Start" button and select "Explore "), please navigate to and delete the following files/folders in bold

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vabuyoyi.dll <--delete this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\toraheke.dll <--delete this file
c:\windows\system32\kapigagi.dll <--delete this file

It's possible deletion errors will occur, drop into safe mode and try again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Next, launch Notepad, (Start > Run, type in: notepad) copy and paste just the text in blue below into it (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"AppInit_DLLs "= "GOEC62~1.DLL "
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-19\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"mohopafimi "=-
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"mohopafimi "=-
Save this as fix.reg and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop. It should look like this: [IMG]
Double-click on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click "Yes" or "OK ". You should receive a message that it was successful. You may delete the file afterwards
Now it is important to reboot the machine.
Next**
See if you can update MBAM.
Please post back with a new HJT log.
Hi and Thanks for your help.
I did the hijackthis fix.
After doing the show hidden files and folders I went to delete the files you requested
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\vabuyoyi.dll <--delete this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\toraheke.dll <--delete this file
c:\windows\system32\kapigagi.dll <--delete this file "
and they were not there to delete.
So I went to the next step "Regedit4" and did that and the only thing that happened was the desktop icons disappeared and then came back. It did not confirm that it ran successfully.
Rebooted and tried to update MBAM and it will not update.
Here is the HJT log:
How's the computer responding now?
A couple of things I would like to see results logs from.
Print this topic or save to notepad, it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps as we will need to close all windows that are open later in the fix.
Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
• Disable any script blocking protection
• Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
• When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
1. DDS.txt
2. Attach.txt
• Save both reports to your desktop.
Please include the contents of both logs in your next reply. The scan will instruct you to post the attach log as an attachment.
No need for that though ..... just post it as you would any other log.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

NEXT**
Download worksnow from HERE:

* IMPORTANT !!! Save worksnow to your Desktop
• Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

• Double click on worksnow & follow the prompts.

Note: worksnow will run without the Recovery Console installed.
• As part of it's process, combofix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

• Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[IMG]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[IMG]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

In your next reply post:
DDS.log
ComboFix.txt

You may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.

The computer seems to be working but it will not let me do any of the requested things this time. It seems to be blocking every move that you tell me to do.

I downloaded and ran the DDS. It blinked a black dos screen and then stopped. I tried a few times but it did the same thing every time. It did not give me the 2 logs files. So I have no log files to post. Any suggestions? I have all script blockers disabled as far as I know.

Downloaded Worksnow combofix and ran. The run box comes up and then goes off (I did not click on it while it was running). It didnt give me the message boxes you pointed out and it did not make a C:\ComboFix.txt file.

Its seems that everything I try it stops it from happening.
So do you think Im doing something wrong? I followed directions exactly as you instructed.

What should I try next.
Thanks for your help because I dont have a clue what could be going on here.
I did another HJT log file for you to see.

Sounds like the tools were downloaded to desktop as needed.

At this time let's try again but go into safe mode with networking first.
If successful post the logs created.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter ".
• Choose your usual account.

* Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
* When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
1. DDS.txt
2. Attach.txt
* Save both reports to your desktop.

Please include the contents of both logs in your next reply. The scan will instruct you to post the attach log as an attachment.
No need for that though ..... just post it as you would any other log.

# Double click on worksnow & follow the prompts.

Note: worksnow will run without the Recovery Console installed.
# As part of it's process, combofix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

# Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

I'd like for you to run this next online scan to check for remnants or anything that might be hidden.
The below scan can take up to an hour or longer, please be patient.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.

• The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition
files.
• After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
• This will start the program and scan your system.
• The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
I am not being redirected anymore. Is it OK to try updating MBAM & AVG now?
That was my other problem.

After the Kapersky scan it found 1 item infected which was the worksnow file you had me to download. It was from my F:\ flash drive (that was plugged in while the scan ran)where I downloaded, copied the worksnow.exe from my good pc to this one.

Here is the Kapersky Log

Your welcome

Yes update MBAM and AVG, we will run a scan shortly.

Correct, don't worry over what Kaspersky found it is indeed what I had you download.

Let's do this first.

Open HijackThis, Click Do a system scan only, checkmark these. Then close all other windows and browsers except HijackThis and press fix checked.

The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but we suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] \ "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe\ "
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] \ "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe\" -start
(Description: InstallShield updater - not needed at startup. Removing this may free up system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] \ "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe\ "
(Description: Adobe reader startup - unnecessarily uses system resources.)

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
(Description: Microsoft Office startup assistant. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a significant amount of system resources.)

Reboot the computer to set the registry.

NEXT**

Double Click the malwarebytes icon on your desktop to start the program.

* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan ", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediately.

The computer seems to be running smooth. However, when I did the MBAM scan it did not find anything but while MBAM was running AVG popped up 4 viruses. They were moved to the virus vault.
Where are they hiding at?
The four viruses were all Trojan horse Agent2.AXL and the locations were:

Good deal

Don't be alarmed here, I was actually expecting to see this.
c:\System Volume Information\_restore{46DE8921-1D39-44D2-A9E9-64119261F211}\RP1\A0000175.com

This actually can't hurt the computer unless you were to use System Restore to go back to an earlier date.

We will take care of this and flush system restore with final cleanup instructions which will follow below.

Don't miss or skip this next step, this will remove malicious files from quarantine and set a clean restore point.

• Click START then RUN
• Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the x and the /u, it needs to be there.
Example below

You can uninstall/delete any other tools or scanners I asked you to download earlier.

I think your good to go, good job!!

Please take the time to read over a few of my preventive tips.

Please navigate to Microsoft Windows Updates and download all the "Critical Updates " for Windows.

Firefox 3
The award-winning Web browser is now faster, more secure, and fully customizable to your online life. With Firefox 2, added powerful new features that make your online experience even better. It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
*NoScript - Addon for Firefox that stops all scripts from running on websites. Stops malicious software from invading via flash, java, javascript, and many other entry points.
