Can I run software program's data CD from flash memory?

Apologies if this is just too basic for words...

I'm running a software program called Rosetta Stone (language software, you've probably seen the ads) that's really terrific. It comes with two CDs: one to install the software, and a second that contains the language-specific data. I use it at home on a CD drive-less netbook by inserting the data CD into an external drive. When I'm on the road and don't have the external drive, however, I'd like to be able to put the language data CD contents onto a flash memory stick and use the program that way.

XP lets me copy the contents of the language data CD onto the flash stick memory, however when I go to run Rosetta Stone (which looks automatically for the language CD when the program starts and doesn't include any option or utility to direct it where to look), it doesn't recognize that there's any language data.

Is there some way to make this work? I'm not looking to run the software from the flash drive as well, just the accompanying data CD.

Apologies for the length here, and I hope what I've written is relatively clear. Many thanks for any help.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

I have moved your thread to the Other Software forum as this is not an OS related query.

Rosetta Stone will be looking for the data CD in the same drive as the main program was installed from. I'm guessing that your flash drive has a different drive letter than that of the external drive.

If this is the case change the drive letter of the flash drive to that of the external drive in Disk Management - Start > Run > diskmgmt.msc > Enter - and test.

The other thought is to copy both CD's to the flash drive and reinstall the program from the flash drive.

No guarantees that either will work, but I run Autoroute from an internal hard drive to which I copied the install CD and only loaded the program, not the data. This obviated the need to insert the CD to use the program

Cheers, Pete! (And thanks for moving the post to the proper section... Newbie error...)

Alas, neither option worked, but I'm grateful for the suggestions.

Rosetta Stone is a funky batch o' software (but excellent nevertheless). It requires 2 CDs. The first is the CD for the program installation to one's PC. The second contains the data that's used live when the program is run.

For example, once Rosetta Stone was installed on my PC, what I'm to do is place the data CD with the different Dutch exercises in the CD drive, at which point Rosetta Stone automatically launches. I tried copying the data CD's contents to a folder on the hard drive, have tried copying it to the Rosetta Stone folder, and of course to a memory stick. No luck.

At any rate, my modest hope was to be a bit more mobile by taking Rosetta Stone (functionally) on the road with me; this only means that I need to be home to use Rosetta Stone so I can stick the data CD into the external drive (which I don't carry with me).

Ain't nothin' but a thang, as we might say this side of the pond.

Cheers again, Pete. I'm grateful for your suggestions.

Sorry to hear that neither of the suggestions worked.
