While you try and sort this out consider using Firefox and see if you can download through that.

When I was having the trouble with IE8, I used "Add/remove" to get rid of it. I then had the same problem that the OP faces - no way to get a download because the IE8 install had deleted the previous version and had made my MSN Explorer browser inoperative. There's actually a command prompt in the install program that says "We have to get rid of the earlier version" and you have to agree.

I did a restore to the configuration I had two weeks earlier. I then went through the download again, saving to file rather than running it. It puts a temporary icon on the desktop.

Once the IE7 download is safely on board, use Add/Remove to get rid of the ******* up IE8, then click on the IE7 icon and install.

I guess I'm not a believer in always having the latest and greatest - I was running IE6. After 20+ years messing with computers, I always wait at least 6 months after something "new and improved" hits the street before I consider getting it. I didn't follow my own advice with IE8 and it bit me.

I sure hope MS Auto Update doesn't load IE8 without me knowing about it.

It won't if you set Updates to 'Notify' and uncheck it when it is offered and then hide it. On Auto you will get it sooner or later :)

Ok now nothing. copyied IE7 Application to stick then to problem computers desk top and installed it. IE now starts to open but closed before it totally opens. Took 2 screen shots of what IE error says and what my restore says on what was done today. So the new IE7 install did not work and now IE does not even open. I will not restore to earlier date unless you say to. I will be in and out and check in here later, Screen shots are at

I looked in add/ delete programs and IE7 is the only listed but no remove option on it.

Gee sorry about being such a bother.

Do you have a Restore point prior to loading IE 8?

A couple more hours and I will be heading for bed - currently ~8.30 pm here.

We have to step out to get daughter at school function. If i should try restore let me know. i will try what you need me to and will keep notes till am for you.
also should i try to uninstall xpsp3 and then try to uninstall IE7 and try a reload before i restore?

I have mixed thoughts on this and am concerned about your ability to download.

My preferred solution is to uninstall SP3, then uninstall IE 7 which should roll you back to a fully functional IE 6. Then reinstall SP3 - from the URL I posted earlier ....
The standalone download of SP3 may be downloaded from here - on your other computer and transfer on USB stick or burn to CD ......

Ok i removed XPsp3 and this made it possible now to remove IE7. Both removed with no difficulty. System booted up ok . I am now reverted back to IE6. Problems solved : Right click drop down menu restored, menu bar on top resored,Download dialog box restored, ability to go into IE options restored. So it looks like its all back using IE6.
    Security updates being downloaded now.

    No - you can reinstall SP3 post #23 ....
and then reinstall 7 - if any problems IE 7 can be uninstalled to roll back to 6.

Confusing I know, but that's the way MS did it.

Ok had a few errors listed at link below. IE error 2,3 and Adobe warning. But have not showed up again since security update. Also firewall , should it be on in windows security? I will start to install SP3 and then IE7.

If spe.atdmt.com shows up again add it to the Restricted sites in IE - it is an adserver.

The IE messages indicate a possible problem with memory, but if they have not shown up again I would not be concerned.

Unless you have a third party firewall installed Windows Firewall should be on by default in SP2 onwards.

NO, you will end up with the same problem. Been there, done that. And so far I have not found a solution to the problem yet, but to be honest I have not looked hard yet either.

PeteC is more knowledgable than me, but I've been through your problem on two different computers.

    My opinion

On balance I would leave things as they are for the present unless you feel like living dangerously in which case bite the bullet and reinstall 8 :)

Be aware that IE8 is currently being pushed out through Windows Update so if you have Updates set to Automatic it will be installed. I suggest you use the 'Notify' option and when IE 8 is offered decline and hide it.

If you do decide to install do it from the standalone setup, the URL of which I posted earlier.

    For future reference .....
