When I try to install Windows 98 SE in my PC, where its chipset does not officially support Windows 98, the installation goes fine upto the end where it scans for installed plug and play devices (just before the last reboot) and it stops responding there. I waited for 15 minuites and then turned it off and then back on. It somehow finishes the last device detection process quickly and reboots. Then it just freezes while it tries to boot normally again. It freezes right after the Bootup loading screen (just before the desktop is shown). It boots fine in safe mode however. But i cannot install drivers (if they can be installed somehow) from my DVD drive which cannot be used in safe mode. So how do I make it run normally? Please tell me if thats actually possible at all. I need Windows 98.
I have the following specs (although they do not support Windows 98 officially) -
    G31D-M7 Chipset
    Intel GMA 3100
    Realtek HD Audio
1 GB RAM and FAT32 File System

    Please help.

    Amount of RAM

    Hi,

I´m not an expert but, Windows98SE and 1 GB of RAM. Isn´t that a problem? I thought 512 MB was the biggest amount WIN98 can handle?

Hmm... I had a feeling the RAM had to do something with this. Any way I can restrict its RAM usage to make it run?

Try booting to the Windows CD and running the installation again.

If you have the same problem, in Safe Mode, look in Device Manager if the faulty device is identified, you can try disabling it.

You would need to source Windows 98 drivers for all the hardware, otherwise they won't work correctly. For example, there may be no drivers for the USB, the graphics will only run in standard mode, there may be no audio, etc, etc.

If you found drivers, and still could not boot into normal mode, you would need to use a boot disk to transfer them onto the hard drive and see if they would install in Safe Mode.

If Windows 98 is not supported, I wouldn't wonder why it won't install. Even if it did, it might run really poorly without the correct drivers.
