I've searched the net for answers and haven't come up with anything that will work short of reinstalling Vista from my disc. I don't want to do that but will if I have to. I was living in Florida for the winter and when I came back after 6 months, this happened. I know I have tons of updates to do because my laptop in Florida ran a bunch during the 6 months we were there.

I have run scan, defrag. I have turned off my firewall and Avast. I don't know what else to do. My Windows Defender can't update either and I guess it's because Windows Update won't work, right? All of my other updates are working fine. I get an error code after trying to update and install after about 3 or 4 tries. The error code is different each time. One of them was 8007007A. I read somewhere that I could go to HKLM/SOFTW/POLICIES/MS/WINDOWS/WINDOWS UPDATE date and delete it and then try to run update again but couldn't find that line. I'm comfortable working in the registry but wasn't sure how to find that line. The most current date for this problem on the net, I found, was back in Feb. of '08. I don't know if there is a newer way to fix this, or not. Can someone please help me with this?

    Thanks.

    :)

Find error codes associated with the failing update in the WindowsUpdate.log.

To open this log, go to Vista's Start Search and type %windir%/WindowsUpdate.log and press OK.

    Post relevant info here.

For more information see: How to read the Windowsupdate.log file

It looks like the error code is the same. I was mistaken that it was different each time. I kept getting a different code with the windows defender. I wanted to attach the log since it was so big and didn't want to take up so much space in this forum, but apparently it's not a valid file. Should I still post it here? I sorta understand this, but would you help me figure it out?

    Thanks.

Hi Panda. Have you tried downloading the windows updates manually from the Microsoft website? Make sure that you shut down all backround programs that are running in the system tray in the taskbar to avoid other problems with installing updates. Click Start< Control Panel< Add/Remove programs and remove any programs that you don't use. If those options don't work then follow these steps.

    1. Click Start and type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click cmd.exe (shown at the top of the Start menu) and click Run as administrator. This will open the command prompt.
    2. In the command prompt window type Net stop wuauserv and press Enter. This will stop the Automatic Update Service.
    3. Type rd /S %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution. This will delete the %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder. Type Y to confirm.
    4. Type Net start wuauserv (hit Enter) to start the Automatic Update Service. Close the command prompt.
    5. Reboot the computer.
    6. When the computer starts back up, open Windows Update and force a Windows Update detection and see if you can get the updates to install correctly.

Let me know if those solutions worked. :)

    Evan Omo.

I tried that already. Can't go to the MS update site. It just routes you back to your update page on your pc.

I've done the 'turn off things in your task tray' bit already. Doesn't make any difference.

Did you read the part where I mentioned that the pc had been idle for 6 months because I was gone and never had problems with updates before? Could it be that there are so many updates that need to be made that it's jamming up somewhere?

Just did what you recommended and it still won't work. Now what???

    :)

Is there any way I can attach the update log into this forum? I really don't want to post the whole log. It's soooooooooo big!!!!!

For the Windows Update log file just copy and paste the last 50 lines or so and post it in your next reply.

What I meant about downloading the updates manually is visit the Microsoft Download Center and search for the Windows Updates that you need installed. When you find the updates you need just download them and see if they install.

Oh. I see where you mean. The only problem with that is, I don't know what I need to update and since you had me clear out my history I have no idea what I did have.

Ok. Here is the log. The last part of it. I hope it gives enough info to figure out what's going on.

I will let Arie take a look at the Windows Update log file.

Regarding searching for Windows Updates, Click Start< All Programs< Windows Update. Click the button that says check for updates and allow Windows to check for updates. After its finished Windows Update will let you know what updates you need to install. Make a note of the updates and then go to the Microsoft Download Center and search for those updates and then download them onto your computer.

    Let's try this:

    1. Open a command prompt: go to Start Search and type cmd, right-click cmd.exe at the top of the start menu and select Run as administrator
    2. Stop Automatic Update Service; type Net stop wuauserv (press Enter) .
    3. Type rd /S %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution. This will delete the %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder. Type Y to confirm.
    4. Type Net start wuauserv (hit Enter) to start the Automatic Update Service. Close the command prompt.
    5. Download & Install the latest Windows Update Agent*
    6. Force a Windows Update detection and see if that works.

*) If you receive a message stating the Update Agent is already installed follow these extra steps:

    1. in the Start Search box type run and click the run at the top of the Start menu.
    2. Navigate to where you saved WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe & click it one time
    3. Click on the Open button
    4. On the Open line, go to the end of the command. After the last quotation mark type the following /wuforce
    5. Click OK and the Update Agent should install

Omo. I think you are not understanding that it isn't working right. I click CHECKING FOR UPDATES. Then it says it found some and I click INSTALL NOW. After about 1 minute I get the CHECKING FOR UPDATES button again. It cycles like this about 3 or 4 times and then I get that error message. It's just not happening.

Arie. Omo had me do that cmd thing. It didn't work. I just now tried it again. Every step, in order, that you told me to do. I even deleted the windowupdate.exe and downloaded the one at the link. Update is doing the same as I first mentioned in this note. 3xs back and forth, then the error 8007007A. Now what??? Sigh...

    :)

    Ok, try this:

To determine whether the issue that you are experiencing is caused by one or more system files that are used by Windows Vista, run the System File Checker tool. The System File Checker tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the system files by using the correct versions.

To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
    2. Right-click cmd.exe in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue
    3. At the command prompt, type sfc /scannow and then press enter. (there is a space between the c and the /)
    4. When the scan is complete, see whether the Windows Update issue that you are experiencing is resolved and also let me know if SFC found any corrupted Windows files or not.

If that doesn't work try resetting the Windows Update Components Manually by following these steps:

    1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
    2. Right-click cmd.exe in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue
    3. At the command prompt, enter the following commands (you may copy and then paste them by right clicking with your mouse and selecting paste), and then press enter after each one.

    net stop wuauserv

    net stop bits

    net stop cryptsvc

    ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 Catroot2.old

    net start cryptsvc

    ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

    regsvr32 wuapi.dll

    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

    regsvr32 wucltux.dll

    regsvr32 wups2.dll

    regsvr32 wups.dll

    regsvr32 wuwebv.dll

    net start bits

    net start wuauserv

    net start Eventlog

    exit

After thats finished reboot the computer and then try running Windows Update again.

Followed your instructions to the tee. No Integrity Violations. After reboot I ran update. Got real excited when the ALLOW or NOT ALLOW window came up, but, alas, it's not working. Still getting the error...

Still hanging in there and hoping for a fix...

I assume you tried resetting the Windows Update Components Manually from my last post? Do you have Windows Vista Service Pack 1 installed? Do you have a Windows Vista DVD or any recovery disks?

Try running Check Disk on the harddrive, How to Run Check Disk in Vista. Let me know if there is any difference with the computer.

So what happened when you installed the new Update Agent? Did it install successfully?

    Some more info...

    8007007A = Insufficient Buffer

It is caused by the number of updates available. So see if you can get into windows update, try "review updates" first and select one at a time to install.

Evan. Yes to all 3 questions. My disc says OPERATING SYSTEM DISC. I was told by someone that I could put the disc in and do a repair. This way I won't lose everything on my computer. Is this correct? I also have a disc that tech support had me make called DRIVERS & APPLICATIONS.

Arie. The update agent installed ok but I still got the message that said I didn't need to do it as I already had one.

As for 'review updates', I don't have that option. All I get is CHECKING FOR UPDATES then the button pops up that says INSTALL NOW. I thought it was curious that I didn't have an option to see what was being updated. I understand that a lot of updates have come out in the past 6 months and I know it would be better to download and install them a few at a time, but there is just no way I can see what it wants! I don't even know which updates I need now since the cmd thing I did wiped out my history! I am at my wits end here!

No need for that, your PC is still working, just not updating... there are worst things in life!

My advise: Just wait for SP2 (should be available soon) & install that when it becomes available.

I agree with Arie on this. I honestly don't know what else you should try other than a repair install of Vista. You can either try a repair install of Vista using the Vista DVD or like Arie said wait until SP2 is released.
