I have been asked to upgrade an NT network to XP. The config is 1 server and 19 clients.

Will XP Pro handle this many workstations/users?

Is there an XP Server product?

    Thanks.

    1 Server 19 clients shouldn't be a problem.
The current Windows server is still the Windows 2000 family of Server products. But Windows.net server 2003 is currently in release candidate, so should go gold before the end of the year. So your choice is either to wait for the final release or go with Windows 2000 server. Windows.net server would be the choice if your hardware is compatible but many companies are a bit reluctant to adopt new technology when it's first released, opting to wait a few months or until the first service pack.

    Just to be sure...

    Do you mean:

    1. Win XP Pro will work, but Win 2000 Server is a better choice,

    or

    2. Win XP Pro won't work, so I must use Win 2000 Server (or .Net) to handle 19 clients?

    Thanks again.

    DOH! Never mind...

I just reread your post and it is clear now that I need to get Win 2000 Server (I try to stay away from MS 1.0 anything).

    Thanks for the help!!

donniebnyc - I agree that for a server, getting a server OS is the best bet.

Also, XP-Pro has a limit of 10 simultaneous connections to it at the same time. Either 10 PCs with one connection each or 1 PC with 10 connections.

XP-Home maxes out at 5 connections.

Note the limitation isn't how many PCs on the network but simply how many that can connect at one time to a specific XP PC.

SBS 2000 (Small Business Server) is a sweet product in a 19 client enviroment.
Only Limitations are 50 clients max and the server has to be stand alone.

    Just for info

The same 10 user limit mentioned by Newt also applies to Win2kPro!

And don't assume these are just w/s connections, includes printers and other connections!
