    Background
1 An Active Directory Domain (Server03/SP1) has number of registered Users.
2 All PCs (XPwin/SP2-3) in the Domain can log on to the Domain using one of these Users.

    Issue
1 At any of PC, user log in as Admin of the PC (not as the Domain Admin)
2 At this point, Admin try to add a newUser to the the PC, this is not allowed because "newUser/PC does not exist ". The new User is not registered in the Domain.

    Question
1 Why is that i can't add user?
2 How can i add a user to the PC but not as a user to the Domain?

    THANKS IN ADVANCE

hi FuzMic, when you add a new user to your pc. make sure that you are not connected to the domain...i mean you're not log-in to your network domain..you're just log-in locally to your PC...then just go to control panel...user accounts.. and try adding a new user.. check if it will work...

In a domain system, you don't add users at the PC. You add them to Active Directory on the Server. Once the user is set up in Active Directory, they should be able to log on the PC without you having to create an account for them on the PC.

Also once they are in AD, you should be able to log into the PC as a domain admin and add them to the local administrators.

    Thanks mates

Reggie i fully understand your reasoning and had been using your way all the time.

However this thread was started because i have an existing PC that have a User not in the AD but registered only with the PC; created prior to it's joining the AD. Hence i will certainly try what FoxHenry says see if there is a new dimension to this.

Similar to Fox's idea, I thought i had not login to the AD if i login locally as Admin to the PC (already exist in the PC). Let's see how it goes.

    Thanks again. Cheers!

You can always login locally in XP. To force one or the other:

    local
    Login as computer_name\user_name

    To domain
    Login as domain_name\user_name

If you have a local account and you want to allow that use access to the domain, the simplest solution is to create a domain account for them, log on to the PC with that account to create a new profile, then log in as admin and copy the old profile over to the new one.

Personally I've always used the "File and Settings Transfer Wizard" to copy everything from one profile to the other. That's slow but is reliable. However, I recall someone else posting recently that you can just copy the profile across via computer properties.

Solution in Computer Management .. Issue at Control Panel

I found how to add a new user either locally to the PC or its Domain. It is by way of right click on Computer Management > Local Users & Groups > Users.

The issue was in the Control Panel > User Accounts; different formats exist for different PC running XPWin/SP2-3. In the form wherein the heading is "Pick a task... ", adding a new account here is fine but in the other format, no addition of new user can be done except through Computer Management.

My question is "Why so? What did i miss ", please enlighten. I would appreciate your comments to put this to rest once & for all. Cheers.
