Is it possible to play video files that are in Windoew Media format in using SMIL files. I've searched around on this one, but have yet to get a clear answer. If so, is there anything I need to download? If not, are there any future plans about this?

If you mean *.SMIL files - Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language [RealPlay], perhaps you could try Real Player. :D

The real goal is to get the functionality that SMIL has to offer on videos encoded in Windows Media format. ASF files to be specific. It dosn't really matter weather they are played in a Realplayer or a Windows media player. Although these ASF files will play in the latest version of RealOne by themselves with no problems, I have not been able to get them to play when inside of SMIL files. So, if anybody has any idea of how to accomplish thie, I'm all ears.

Iuga, do you have any idea what you are talking about? Anyway, I do know the language SMIL, but knowing a language, and having that language support a certain format are completely different things. SMIL creates presentations using text, images and video clips. It can even be used to create flash-like presentations. It gives one alot of control over how those video clips behave. I want to create a rich presentation that is embedded in a web page. This is simple enough. With this presentation I will use video clips. Were those clips in Real Time Streaming Protocol, this would be a relatively simple issue. But, instead I only have Advanced Streaming Format clips to work with in this case. The decision to use Advanced Streaming Format clips was made by an ignorant person who cannot be reasoned with at all (I would never use ASF, would you?). But that cannot be changed. Were past the format issue. Since ASF is a Windows format, I figured I would probably be able to find some Windows Guru on a forum called Windows BBS who might know more about how this format, or codec if you want to get technical, can be used (And yes, I know anyone knowledgeable enough about Windows to be called a Guru will probably have given up Windows long ago, but again, thats another issue entirely). And perhaps someone might be up to the challenge of finding out how to get a clip made in this format into a SMIL file. (And yes, you can play a file in the Microsoft Windows based Advanced Streaming Format in a Realplayer)

    You are full of balogna.

    (Something familiar here!)

Make your own decision, make your own format, please yourself instead of being angry with others.

Obviously you're not, but you may be in the future when you've matured. :D

I think you just shot your left foot, want to keep going and try for the right?

I'm not angry, I was just trying to explain myself further. As far as making my own streaming format goes, well I really didn't expect to get that kind of response. Then I guess I would have to make my own playback agent, and my own encoder to stream the files in the first place. That would be quite a daunting task don't you think? Of course than I would have to convince the people I am doing this for to use my own format, which would be futile because first it would take an incredibly long time to create such a format and all the necessary software to support it, by which time it would be too late anyways. Furthermore, the same people have already refused to use anything but windows media format, and were it not for that there would be no problem in the first place...cause we would just use real. So you accuse me of being ignorant and irrational, yeah I said you were full of balogna, but hey balogna aint so bad, I actually like it, it tastes good, anyway... I don't think you really have a good grasp of exactly what I'm talking about...do you even know what an encoder is? Sure, you can look it up and post the definition. But do you really know? I'm sure you know what streaming is, but probably not how it works. So please don't call me ignorant.
