I have been trying to get rid of a nasty trojan backdoor bug, but it pretty much either shuts down or evades every application or attempt I make to remove it, so I've decided I just want to do system recovery. I have anything important backed up. Unfortunately, part of this evil programs' bag of tricks is disabling System Restore. I've turned it off and back on to no avail, and now I have no restore points and the virus keeps me from making new ones. The problem then is that XP won't allow me to do PC Recovery without doing System Restore first. So my question is, can I get around this requirement and do Recovery without doing Restore, since Restore is not an option?

Hi libertyguy. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

I would read this post and post a new thread in the Malware and Virus Removal Forum. The members will be able to help you clean any viruses that you may have on your computer. If you can't get your computer clean then post back in this thread and let me know.

    PC Recovery

Hi! I made my post over in the virus/malware last week, but haven't had any luck. I know it's volunteers and so it may take awhile for someone to have the time to help me, but I urgently need an operable computer. I would like to force a pc recovery without doing system restore, because systerm restore has been disabled by the virus. Thanks so much for any help that can be offered. :)

Do you have a Windows XP CD or any recovery disks? If you do then you should be able to boot from the disks and perform a fresh install of XP. You shouldn't even need to perform a system restore. Just boot from a Windows XP CD or the recovery disks that came with your computer.

I don't have any discs for this computer. I feel like I would have kept any that came with the computer, but that's not to say it isn't possible they have been lost. Will I need to try to get one of these discs? Can I not use the HP_RECOVERY (D:) drive somehow?

    Hi libertyguy,

You've probably already done this, but have you tried hooking up your drive to another computer as a slave and running the AV & AS apps from there?

Question for Mods, Staff: Can a HJT scan be done on a slave drive?

Thanks for the suggestion. No, I haven't done that 1) because I don't know how, ha! 2) The computer I'm writing on is not mine, so I'm loathe to mess with it too much 3) what i'm writing on is a netbook, so if I do do something with it, just keep that in mind.

Nope, HJT only works on a system drive or a boot drive.

Thanks for the reply surferdude2. Since I don't have the discs, do I need them? I noticed there are some XP downloads available online. Can I use those? Are they safe (or as safe as can be expected)?

Since you have an HP computer, you can do a Restore by following the instructions HERE.
