    Newbie question.

I have a Sony Vaio AR with 2 250GB hard disks. One of them failed (this happened before a year ago - at that time it was still under warranty and Sony replaced one of them. This is the probably the other one :().

I replaced the broken disk with a new 500GB one. I then inserted my recovery disc and restored my computer to its state before the time of the crash. Everything seems to work fine.

    So far so good....

But, it is only seeing the two disks as 250GB each where in actual fact one is 250 and the other 500.

How can I get it to recognise the new disk as 500GB?

Thanks for any help you may be able to give me :)

Hi sinbarambam. Click Start< Run and type compmgmt.msc and press enter. The Computer Manangment window should open. Now click on the Disk Managment button which will show you your harddrives. Does Disk Manangment show your 500 GB harddrive as being 500 GB's or only 250 GB's? If it shows your drive as being 500 GB's but you only have 250 on the partition then you can expand the size of the partition so its the entire 500 GB's.

Try going into the computers BIOS and see if the drive is recognized as being 500 GB's or only 250 GB's.

So what shows in your computer is one 500GB hard drive with two 250GB partitions.

One should note that is is rare for a notebook/laptop to have multiple internal hard drives.

    Thanks for your reply Arie.

This means that it is recognising the 500GB disk (and has partitioned it into 2 250GB parts), but NOT the other 250GB disk. How do I get it to recognise this?

I didn't know it was unusual for a laptop to have two disks. I guess when it came out (about 20 months ago I think) there were no small 500GB disks available yet?

Can you install SIW & report what is listed under Storage Devices & Logical Disks?

So again, it is showing only one internal disk. Might be because of Sony's proprietary stuff (although I'm not sure on that. I have no Sony, never had & never will). You'd probably be better off talking to your supplier.

My supplier is overseas and so this would mean sending it in to Sony support (which is like turning on a money tap)...

    Any other suggestions, anyone....?

You may be on to something (although I have zero knowledge in this area). When my hard disk failed the message that came up said somehting about RAID 0...
