I installed IE 8 that was part of my latest Windows Update (I'm running Vista HP). Even though the Windows sidebar is not part of IE, my clock in Windows sidebar now suddenly won't keep time -- it stops "ticking." This issue surfaced right after I installed the IE8. If it's not related to IE8, could it be a registry issue causing the clock to not operate? Bob F

The standard clock I use has an "optional" second hand...Maybe you need to re-enable yours??

Thanks, but this clock is in the Windows Sidebar (Vista HP). Right after I installed the new IE 8 download that was part of the latest Windows Update, the clock stopped working properly. Any connection to the IE 8 install? Not sure.

Hi fourdoor2041. Try closing the clock gadget in the sidebar and then re enable it again. If that clock still isn't ticking try right clicking on the sidebar icon in the system tray and select close. Then go into Control Panel and find the sidebar properties. Windows Sidebar should restart itself. See if there is any change.

Thanks Steve R Jones & Terminator: I have performed both the renable and the closing and opening of the sidebar. I have had some success. Still a little "iffy" as the clock is still stopping but not as often. I found the option for the second hand; I tried that and the second hand stops moving. I obviously have something wrong. Maybe a registry? It's weird, this started happening after the latest Windows Updates and the downloading of the new IE 8. Maybe just a coincidence about the IE 8. There must be some answer to this small problem.

Gadgets not working properly after IE8 installation

Hi There - brand new member posting for first time !!

I have also had the problem after downloading updates for Windows on 29 April on Vista Home Premium - this included IE8.
Gadgets have not worked properly since as follows:
Clock has stopped , there are strange pink borders and white lines around the calender and other gadgets ,and the text also seems blurred

I then uninstalled IE8 only ( not the rest of the updates which included Office SP2 ) ,reverted to IE7 and all Gadgets back to normal , so definitely an IE8 problem causing a conflict with Gadgets .
I have logged a fault and request for a solution with Microsoft yesterday and waiting - if miracles DO happen : no doubt they will soon advise /or send an update fix ...............any one know why or what to do in interim to correct without becoming too complicated or risk messing with the
    system ??
I can live with IE7 or Mozilla in interim, so not losing sleep over
it !-Maybe better just to wait .

One last thing ...........after downloading gadgets from the web , they install , however ,just cannot find them again nor do they open ....where do I look or what do I do when downloading to have them open on the desktop/sidebar or appear in the Gadgets Box ????

Thanks Alsof. Would you or anyone share with me the Microsoft reporting option that's best for this kind of issue? I usually use this Windows BBS option, but this issue is pretty likely a result of the latest Vista update, so I, too, would like to report it to Microsoft, if it would even help. The link I found was through Vista's "help and support" in the Start menu. I found a link to Microsoft Answers and then to the Windows Vista Forums by following the link "Go to the Forums." Are there any better options for reporting Windows problems to Microsoft other than through the Vista Forums? Bob F (fourdoor2041)

Alsof: sometimes it's hard to see the forest from the trees -- I passed over this option many times -- now I see it. The Microsoft Vista Solution Center -- bottom of the page. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I sent in my issue and allowed MS to download the problem data collection software to look at my computer from the inside. Never had done this before. Thanks again Alsof!

PLeasure -I am but a fool when it comes to files , findling things and clicking the wrong thing and screwing it up even further - in this department as far a computer experience goes , I wud give myself a 5* rating and if anyone needs some pointers let me know !.......On the IE8/Gadgets: let Microsoft sort this out for us all .....we are not unique -it must apply to all .
Let me know what they say if you hear before me ,as I have uninstalled IE8 and working from IE7 .
Sure they will send the fix as an update without us even knowing it !

Tadtam - thanks for this ...........reset to 96DPI going into Personalisation and on left where it asks to set Font size - then dowmloaded IE8 - gadgets then works all OK and all is fine with the graphics !!!!! - BUT when I set to 104% ,using the Custom DPI an not 120 DPI( going to try thjis as well ) , I am back to square one and sit with strange Vista graphics and a clock not working ....any other ideas as to how to correct mine ? 96DPI bit small for me nd 105 range a good size .

Seems like only two default sizes (96 and 120) work correctly. I usually have it set at 113% and gadgets do not work at a "custom" setting. Hopefully MS will fix soon...

Pse see reply ex Microsoft - they say a video driver card to be upgraded - I hsve a NVidi G Force 8500 GT video card ...am checking to see whther this is where the problem is by seeing whther I indeed have latest driver .maybe \i am either goling to live with 96DPI or Mozilla Firefox at 105 DPI .......

"I have done quite a bit of research on your issue. My engineers have confirmed that your issue is related to the graphic card drivers installed on your PC. This is the reason why Windows Vista insists on defaulting to 96DPI. Should you wish to change the DPI, you would need to upgrade your graphic card drivers to suit your DPI preference.

You may contact the manufacturer of the computer to obtain the latest drivers alternatively if you know the model, etc of the graphic card, you can use a search engine to find the latest drivers ".

    Hope this helps .

I DL'd latest ATI drivers and it still would not work.
I cannot use 96DPI (too small) or 120DPI (too large), so I have capitulated and uninstalled the IE8 update and everything is ok with IE7. The sidebar works normally at Custom setting of 110 DPI.

I reset to 96 DPI; reinstalled IE8. To increase DPI on Desktop ICONs I held CTRL key down and used mouse scroll wheel. Sidebar works.
I also inceased IE font using same method.
Seems as long as you use that method Sidebar remains "normal ".
Some items you cannot increase that way, but is livable......until MS fixes (hopefully)
