This problem just stared about three weeks ago... up until than
"editing as new" or using "reply" emails went as expected with pictures inline and or with attachments.

Now most emails that I receive with jpg attachments and or pictures inserted in the body of the email are removed when I "Forward" or "Reply" (removing address as needed) them on to others..

I have "forwarded" the email to myself using 3 different account address as a test case.
When I check my "Sent" folder the attachment or picture are missing on the emails that shows being "sent ". A placeholder
for a picture inserted in the body does remain. Same holds true when viewing the "test mail" in my Inbox.

Sometimes I'm able to "edit as new" a email with an attachment, the attachment will show in the "compose screen" window but
when I hit "send" the "sending message" pop up box states it's
"attaching... but never completes the task.
I have looked in the folder that I think Thunderbird uses as a working temp folder... (date & time matches my attempts)
C:\Documents and Settings\Denny\Local Settings\Temp.... and the jpg file that I attached to the email is there.

Some of the things I already done are....
Compacted my folders in all 3 mail accounts. (Note..Inbox & Sent folders are very large but have not had any problems with Thunderbird.. until now).
Check Tools -> Options -> Composition -> General tab. Made sure "Forward messages: inline" is selected instead of as attachment.
View attachments "inline" is also checked..
I also have experimented using the same email with the attachment in a completely different computer that uses IncrediMail configured as pop 3.
That computer uses the same ISP provider as I use (but not the same DSL account). The email worked as it should, so that probably rules out the mail server.
I have turned off my antivirus and firewall as a test to see if they
were causing the problem.. But the problem still existed.
If I "start a new email" and drag the jpg from the original email to the new one there is no problem sending it.
Also ran a full antivirus scan, CCleaner, ATF cleaner, & updated with Secunia PSI

In Thunderbird I have 3 different email accounts all set up as POP 3 and the problem is with all 3 accounts.

    Thunderbird version 2.0.0.21 (20090302)
Windows XP Pro Service pack 3
Avira AntiVir Personal Free edition V 8.2.0.347
Zone Alarm free edition V 8.0.298.000

Thanks in advance for any assistance with this problem..

You listed everything except for your ISP.

    drhans2,

Try forwarding yourself another test message and before sending it click on "Options" - "Format" and "Plain and Rich (HTML) Text" as shown at this link:.... http://www.raysmyth.net/tb-mail.jpg

Frankly, I don't know why this is necessary but, it's one of the tricks I found that usually works when the attachments or embedded images don't go with the message being forwarded.

I can only assume the "Auto Detect" sometime don't detect.

    Good Luck, Ray

    Thanks Westside and Ray...

Westside I didn't think that my ISP was relevant since the problem didn't occur when I tested from a different computer & dsl account via the same provider (Qwest/MSN using pop3.live.com vie IncrediMail). My ISP is Qwest/MSN using pop3.live.com vie Thunderbird.
In hindsight the flaw in my test is.. since I have 3 different pop3 mail servers configured in Thunderbird and in each account I choose to use the server associated with each account I was not testing with Qwest/MSN (pop3.live.com) on both computers... It was smtp.gmail.com & pop3.live.com or bluebottle & pop3.live.com. My Qwest/MSN pop3.live.com email I rarely use.. So much for my test... but thanks for triggering the flaw..

Ray I did have "Auto-Detect" checked, and did try your suggestion. and much thanks are in order.. that trick appeared to "retrain" Thunderbirds options. (I'm assuming)... I followed by sending some test emails using option "Plain and Rich Text" and than with my default option "Auto-Detect ".. so far all is good... thanks again...
