When someone comes to you with a problem, away from WindowsBBS, or you just don't have net access to let someone review that RSIT log for you... What tools do you fall back on? Not that you're going to even use all of them, but what do you keep a copy of?

Here's what I try to keep on a CD and updated:
    - AdAware
    - Avira
    - Comodo
    - CleanUp!
    - CWShredder
    - MBAM
    - McAffee Removal Tool (MCPR)
    - Norton Removal Tool
    - Spybot
    - HJT
    - Sysinternals Suite

Anything I should pack in there that you don't see? I can't read an RSIT log's extensive details yet, but I know how to pick BHOs out of an HJT log and get them gone...

I just seem to be the only computer-literate person amongst my group of friends lately, and I keep getting asked to fix things (some of which I haven't seen before). So, I was just wondering if I have a big enough net to catch the worst fish in?

    Opinions? Suggestions?

Presumably you mean free software? If so, I would add these, in alphabetical sequence:
    AutoFix
    CD-DVD-FIX
    ComboFix
    Nero Cleanup
    SuperAntiSpyware
    TestDisk
    WhoCrashed
    Windows Installer Cleanup

    These are also useful:
    Ccleaner
    CrossLoop
    JavaRa
    MoveOnBoot
    MyUninstaller
    Process Explorer
    Recuva
    Sdelete
    SIW

    Autoruns
    Regedit
    SuperAntispyware
Offline NT Password & Registry Editor, Bootdisk / CD

...and most importantly, a sata & ide to usb converter so I can connect the user's hard drive to my comp via usb, mount the drive and manually remove files and/or virus scan.

I don't use anything other than the security suite that came with my computer and the anti-spyware program that I purchased. I've never found a need for anything else.

The latest MSRT on CD downloaded from Microsoft. Run in safe mode gets most bugs.

And a Puppy Linux boot CD. If you know what files are doing the damage ( our AV Console lists them ) boot up in Puppy Linux, mount the offending harddrive or USB and get in and search/delete the files. They have no protection in Linux.
I have an old laptop just for this purppose to check incoming keys our reps bring in from customers.
Puppy Linux loads only to RAM in this mode, PC off, clean as a whistle. Easy to use desktop environment, no need to know any unix etc.
