I installed IE8 a week or so ago, as it is supposed to be "optimized" to work with MSN. Since doing the installation, I have recurring problems similar to those posted by JayT. I'm new here and couldn't figure how to reply to a locked thread and so am posting a new one.

in my case it seems to be a random glitch on several of the web-sites I visit frequently. It happens with both the MSN Explorer browser (my normal way of working) and with IE accessed directly.

What is a real PITA is that the "Close" button on the message drop-down ( "MSN has encountered a problem and has to close ") doesn't do anything. Everything is frozen and I have to switch the power off and back on to get things working again.

The computer I'm having the problem with is running XP with SP3. It is ethernet connected to the web. My other machine, same configuration but still on IE6 and a WiFi link to the web, doesn't exhibit the problem.

When I went to Microsoft's Hot Fix page, the fix for this problem is only for IE6.

Any ideas? Maybe I should revert to IE6 for a while.

I have the same thing happening on various well used websites and I also get 'doctor watson postmortem debugger' and that freezes up my IE8. I get these suggestions from well meaning people how to undo this but it am always warned that this might harm my computer if I do not really know what I am doing - which I don't. So HELP me , someone out there.

Hi fdamp and susanai. The first thing I would do would be try running Intenet Explorer with no addons. Click Start< All Programs< Accessories< System Tools< Internet Explorer (No-Addons). See if you still experience the issue when you start IE without addons. Also when in IE click Tools< Delete Browsing History. Check all the checkboxes except for Preserve Favorites and Cookie Data. Then click the delete button. Let me know if there is any change.

I solved the problem by getting IE7 to replace IE8. According to my son, who's an MCSE, IE8 is only just out of beta testing and may still have a lot of undiscovered glitches. He doesn't think it's ready for prime time yet.

Go to Microsoft's download site and ask for a "save to file" download. It will put a temporary icon on your desktop to access it later.

Once that's done, go to Control Panel's "Add/Remove Programs" page and remove IE8. Then go to the temporary icon and click it to start the installation of IE7.

IE7 seems to work just fine and I haven't had any lock-outs since I installed it.

To EvanOmo -Thanks everyone for your advice. It was easy to understand and Evan Omo - it worked. Now windows Live Messenger won't sign in automatically, been like this for 3 days. Tried yelling at it but doesn't budge it. I know it's the height of laziness to not want to sign in manually but it may also be a big problem. Since I have downloaded the latest messenger it has more trouble than it's worth.
To FDAMP - I would not go back to IE7 I love my IE8 too much for that. But thanks for answering.
