Windows Vista Temporary black screen after logging in

    When I boot my computer, after I log in, the screen goes black, but keeps the mouse on the screen. The last time it happened I ran the task manager and I found that windows explorer was running, but it was still black. Do you know what the problem is? If you don't, what do you need to know about my computer to know what the problem is?

    Thanks.

    No. All I could see was my pointer. It lasts about two or three minutes, and when the desktop finally loads, the computer is fully running. No lag like when it normally loads.

    Could be something loading during the startup is causing the problem. Do you recall installing something right before this issue started?

    No. I was just uninstalling all the stupid dell stuff and some annoying windows live stuff (the computer's like two days old). When I restarted it after that, everything went fine. But the next morning, I got an annoying black screen before the desktop loaded for about one to two minutes.
    Would the best solution be to wipe the drive, then reinstall Vista? Because there is essentially nothing on the computer yet, so it wouldn't be too much of a hassle.

    Hi weirdesky. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

    Formatting your harddrive is always an option. Before you try that though, start up the computer and as soon as it starts booting press F8. This will bring up the advanced boot options menu. Select Last Known Good Configuration and press enter. See if your issue is resolved. If its not reboot again and press F8 but this time select Safe Mode from the options. Does your computer boot in Safe Mode? If it does then its likely that a program or a driver is interfering with Windows Explorer. If Windows Explorer doesn't load in Safe Mode then I would say a format would be the way to go.

    That doesn't seem to help. I guess I'll have to format drive. Thanks for the advice.

    Since your going to format the drive make sure you back up any important data you want to keep before you format. :)
