    Hello all,
We are running an NT4 network (SBS PDC, NT4 Server BDC) with primarily Win9x clients. We have 1 Win 2k client and there is a wierd problem. I can get it to log on to the network, print , access various shared resources and map network drives. However, when looking in Windows Explorer, it shows that the mapped drives are all disconnected even though I can still browse them. Also, the printers show themselves as being disconnected even though I can print without any problems. If I do a NET USE it shows the mapped drives and printers as being disconnected. Any idea how to get the status of these things changed to connected? Thanks.

Normal 2K behavior. And in this case, the red "X" only means the mapping isn't active and not that it has died.

When you click on a network share it should lose the red "X" for a while.

Thanks Newt. However, I wish to set up a printer for use with a DOS program. When I use the "net use lpt1 \\********\konica /persistent:yes" command I get an error stating "System error 67 has occured The Network name cannot be found "

Is this related or another problem altogether?

You said, "Is this related or another problem altogether? ".

Yes it is. :) (sorry, couldn't resist that one)

When you do the net use are you doing

    \\192.168.23.142\myprinter or
    \\printserver\myprinter

And in general, how does your network resolve names?

Also, for a quick fix (and a workable one unless you have this on lots of systems) put the print server in a hosts file on the 2K PC.

Another thought - part of the printer install is a question about using DOS I think. If you answer "yes" it sets up the LPT1 association. If "no" it doesn't. Which way are you configured?

As always Newt is correct on the red x. There is a resistry item on the time out for I know so probably an on off, but! Come onnn! Smile! I don't remember I will look it up if you really really need it!

Main reason I steped in! I would not map lpt1: start with lpt3 and go up! Because you might find your self redoing it if they decide to put a printer on lpt1: or 2!

Another thing that you may not know, you cannot map a printer past 3 for Win2k and XP. If you figure that out let me know as I am working on it now in my spare time! Smile!

Newt this was what I asked you about, where to bring it up for network professionals!

Win95/8/me will map up to lpt9:

Win2k & XP will not! net use will show it mapped but any DOS print job will just not print! No error just no print!

Thanks Newt. I had been using the printserver name, but tried the IP address and it worked. The printserver was in the hosts file already. I don't know why it didn't recognise the name but...... it works now. I don't recall that Windoze asked about using the printer in DOS. I know it does for Win9x, but does it for Win2k? I am not 100% sure as to how our network resolves names, I would have to look into that question.
Thaks mflynn for the lpt3 advise. I had actually been using lpt2, but moves it to 3 instead.

Anyway, problem appears to be solved for now. Thanks again for your help :D

eisenerg - I'm puzzled as well about it not working if you have the print server identified in your hosts file. Unless the print server is across a router or two. Or possibly the hosts file is mis-located. 2K/XP want it in %systemroot%\windows\system32\drivers\etc. Anyway, glad mapping by address did it for you. That will often work when a name doesn't.

Mike - LPT9!!!! And you want to do this because ___? Have you noticed your cigarets smelling funny lately? Making you real mellow? :)

    LOL!

No Newt all I meant was that they Dos Win3x 95/8/me all where capable of going to 9.

I think 5 is as high as I have had to actually go, but I did try 9 to confirm!

But now I have a client that has HP Inkjet on lpt1: Capture 4 inch wide ticket printer on 2, Zerox copier on 3, Highspeed DM on 4. Win2K cannot map to 4!

I spent an hour or so with Copernic searching the WWW. No actual data that says yes or no!

Tried a few things on my own no luck!

I began a search of the registry using LPT1: To find all the settings etc but got busy! I am going to get back to that!

Did find a work around by unmaping the least used printer an remaping the needed printer! Problem is if they run the program that uses the first printer while still up on the swapped, then it is no longer swapped when they return it!

So happens that the person that does this is pretty smart and knows to back out when she finishes printing!

Can you imagine nine captured printers on 1 computer! LOL!

I don't smoke think you! But you are a fine one to talk considering that rabbit tobacco that you get when you go Carp fishing!

    LoL,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
