    Two of todays" Tuesday April 14/09" Microsoft Updates ,Downloaded, but will not Install. Both KB956572 & KB959426 will not Install even after many many tries. They are both High Priority Fixes to correct unauthorizes system entries. Others in this current Package downloaded & installed O.K. On my XP Home edition Computer

    I am sure that they will fix it as long as I am not the only one with this problem.My Question is have anyone else experienced this . TY loonychoons

    Hi Loonychoons, have you tried doing Custom Select > Download > Save > Desktop. Then disconnect Broadband and Close all of your Anti Virus and Spywares, and install? Then restart you AV's and Spyware after and see if that works.Neil.

    I had the same problem this morning and found this website as a result.
    I tried several times to install from the update site and had given up and decided to wait for someone else to provide an answer.
    However, I just tried installing from the "yellow shield" which is something I don't usually use and they both installed first time. I have no idea why or whether anything else had happened in the meantime but it may be worth a try.

    First to {retiredlearner}thank you for your suggestions. Yes I tried all those ways to Install the Updates, but no go? I seems that after they downloaded once, they will not download again. I have not tried to search for them then delete and Download again, as I am sure that MS will fix the problem now that I know I am not the only one with it?? PS I have a brand new Kiwi Cousin In Christchurch !! It was fun telling everyone that She was born already but her Birthday is tomorrow LOL

    To {Kettlefish} I thought of doing what you suggested but I am no longer getting the Yellow shield? Could be because I have the updates downloaded and Just not Installed?? Thanks for your Idea , but like you I like to have full control of any MS updates and avoid the Load and Install in the Background Thanks to you both loonychoons the Cunuk PS Kettle fish Welcome aboard I see that you are pretty new Lenny Chowns

    Loonychoons.
    Thanks for the welcome. I joined today as a result of google picking up on your problem which was the same as mine. I think this is one site I will wish I had found a long time ago. It might have saved me a lot of wasted effort.
    Re the "shield ", I have mine set to notify me of new updates only with the means of download and/or install left to me. It then hangs around until everything is completed whether I use it or the update site. I don't know if you have the same setting as mine.
    Keith.

    Still will not Update?

    KettleFish : Yes I have set my update MS the same as you ! I have tried everything that I can think of to make them Install, I turned off all my Software Protection and Firewalls to no avail. I may need to call on some of my Big-gun Friends on the WindowsBBS. As they may have not seen my Post.

    It is hard to believe that only 3 of us had any problems?

    Where in the UK are you from? My Family Name CHOWNS is From the Thame area on the Border of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. I was able to trace my Family tree back to the 14 & 15 Hundreds Lenny

    You may want to start a free Windows Update support incident
    request: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527

    =============================
    Support for Windows Update:
    http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

    For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB123456).

    For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

    For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through your usual support contacts.

    FRIDAY
    I turned off every third party security software, Updates still would not Install.

    In Reload the Update Temp Folders Step 3 Could not find {The Software Distribution Folder} ? Maybe it has a Different name? Then Found It and went a couple more steps and then Error Windows can not find cmd file Try Search????? Pretty sure this is not the problem!!!

    Download & install manually, Did not work in SAFE MODE But KB959426 was Run from the Desktop and Installed in regular Run MODE. BK956572 still will not Install and there was no errors to screenshoot and send you. Until I get this resolved I am going to use my Linux system. TY Leonard Chowns

    Dear Leonard, " Or Lenny , loonychoons for BBS Readers "

    Thank you for contacting Microsoft Windows Update Support. My name is Jojo, and I am glad to work with you. To contact me, please send emails to: with the case ID SRX1099687208 in the subject line.
    From your description, I understand that the following two updates have been downloaded but cannot be installed:
    Security Update for Windows XP (KB956572)
    Security Update for Windows XP (KB959426)

    If I have misunderstood your concern, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    I understand the inconvenience caused by this issue. Please be assured that I will work with you through the course of this case until we find a resolution.

    The issue may be caused by one of the following factors:

    1. The installation is affected by some third-party security software.

    2. The downloaded installation file is corrupted.

    We will address some of the more common causes of this issue. It is important that we attempt to connect to the Windows Update web site after each step to confirm whether the resolution has worked. This will prevent us from having to proceed with additional troubleshooting steps and provide us with valuable feedback to further develop our support resolutions for you and our future customers. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

    NOTE: Some third party programs can also affect the Windows Update service. If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing the Windows Update site later. Please be sure to re-enable them after completing the update process.

    Step 1: Reload the Update temporary folders
    =================================
    One possible cause is that Windows Update's temporary folder contains corrupted files. This step will clean its "Download ", which contains the Windows Update downloaded update installation files. After renaming this folder, all the files will be automatically recreated, except the Windows Update History data and downloaded updates' installation files. This will have no negative effect on your computer's performance.

    1. Click "Start ", "Run ", type: "cmd" (without quotations) and press "Enter ". In the command window, type "net stop WuAuServ" (without quotations) and press "Enter ".

    2. Click "Start ", "Run ", type: "%windir%" (without quotations) and press "Enter ".

    3. Double-click the SoftwareDistribution folder.

    4. In the opened folder, rename the folder Download to Download.old.

    5. Click "Start ", "Run ", type: "cmd" (without quotations) and press "Enter ". In the command window, type "net start WuAuServ" (without quotations) and press "Enter ".

    Note: After resolving this Windows Update issue, please feel free to delete the Download.old folder.

    Now try Windows Update to see if the issue has been resolved. Please let us know if this step has resolved it. If not, please proceed to the next step.

    Step 2: Download and install the update manually.
    =====================================

    1. Please download the update from

    Security Update for Windows XP (KB956572)

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=73d2324f-be59-4b0c-b1ac-9876a13c2c03

    Security Update for Windows XP (KB959426)
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=3de0684d-605c-489b-bdc7-08bce9b2d4f6
    2. Please click “Download”, when the File Download windows appear, please click "Save ", and follow the directions to save them to the Desktop.
    3. Restart the computer.
    4. Keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.

    5. Choose "Safe Mode ", and press "Enter ".

    6. Please install the update in Safe Mode.

    Note: In Safe Mode, your system display and Desktop will look and perform differently than in Normal Mode. This is only temporary. We can restart the computer to switch to Normal Mode.

    However, if an error is encountered when installing the update manually, please capture a screenshot for further research.

    How to capture a Screenshot:
    ======================
    1. When the error appears, please press the "Print Screen" key (PrtScn) on your keyboard.

    2. Click "Start ", click "Run ", type MSPAINT, and click "OK ".

    3. In Paint, click "Paste" under the "Edit" Menu, click "Save" under the "File" menu, type a file name for the screenshot, choose JPEG as "Save as type ", click "Desktop" on the left pane, and click "Save ".

    4. Please find the screenshot on the Desktop and send it as an attachment to:

    Please try the steps above. If the issue persists, please also assist me in collecting the latest Windows Update Log for further research.
    How to capture WindowsUpdate.log:
    ============================
    Note: Since there are two Windows Update log files with similar names, please be aware that I am requesting the "WindowsUpdate.log" file without a space in the middle of the name.

    1. Click "Start ", "Run" and type "WindowsUpdate.log" (without quotations).

    2. Click "OK ". We will see a file named "WindowsUpdate.log ".

    3. Now click on the "File" menu and then click "Save As" and select "Desktop" in the "Save in" option on the top of the window.

    4. Click "Save ". The file will be saved to your Desktop. Please send it as an attachment to

    However, if the file is unable to be collected by the above steps, we can also use the following method to collect it.

    1. Click "Start ", "Run ", type: "%windir%" (without quotations) and then press "Enter ".

    2. In the open window, we will see a file named "WindowsUpdate.log ".

    3. Please send it as an attachment to:

    Note: When attaching files to emails, the process will vary depending on the email application being used. While you are composing the email, most applications will provide you with either an "Attach" button or a Paper Clip Icon to click in order to attach a file. After clicking this button/icon you must browse to the file you wish to attach and select it by either double clicking it or clicking it once and then clicking "Attach ".

    Please try my suggestions and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    I look forward to your response.

    Best Regards,

    Jojo Zheng

    Hi Lenny, I have just gone into Windows Update and put the KB's in one at a time and hit search and Downloaded and saved to Desktop with both of them. I already have them installed (Auto) which I confirmed by using Belarc. It would appear from your email that the answer may be in your AV and Spyware which you list installed on your comp and may be some major conflict with one of them. Can you locate through Safe Mode? Neil.
    Ps. We're an hour flight from Christchurch but we do Start the day for you.

    I thought of that Arie?

    I have been limited to what I can write by E-mail and WindowsBBS.com. A few years ago my Brother Died of Cancer Of the Oesophagus and on his death bed made me promise to get checked we had both suffered with heartburn and Acid reflux for years. My specialist has been scoping my throat every year since. Last time he found something that should not be there. To remove this growth the Hospital must scrape away the inner surfaces wait a few months for it to heal and do it all over again. Starting last Oct 08 and then , Jan 09, and April the 3 I have had 3 treatments or operations. How many more? They think maybe 7?
    You See, because I have been having these series of Throat operations I Can not communicate by Voice, And Snail Mail " Canada Post " is no Answer Too Slow? I have dealt with MS help before and sometimes the seem to take their time answering my last report? But in time they will, until the Instance is closed. Thank You For your concern Leonard Chowns C.E.T. loonychoons PS they caught it early so Lord willing I will be fine.

    Hello,
    You are NOT the only ones with this problem. I have been experiencing this problem with this particular update for a couple of weeks now. I keep installing it and it keeps telling me that I need to install it.
    I finally just went and changed my settings to where my computer will not automatically update or notify me and then turned the notification off in the Security Center.
    I have followed the steps that you gave from Microsoft to the letter (which I had done before also), and still I am getting the update notification.
    It shows up in my Add/Remove Programs and in the Windows Update when I go the Microsoft Update site.

    Let me know if you find a solution for this.
    Thanks.

    Latest from Jojo at MS. FIRST my Report to Jojo

    Jo jo : the following is a Copy & Paste. So far your suggestion has worked, but I have a important Question?

    Step 1: Remove KB956572 in Add or Remove Programs
    =====================================
    1. Click "Start ", click "Run ", type: appwiz.cpl in the Open box, and then click "OK ".
    Note: Be sure to have "Show updates" checked (if Service Pack 2 for XP is installed).

    I had already tried Step "1" With my Computer's "ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAM????? Many Many times I had { show Updates }on, But KB956572 either was not found or did not Delete when asked to. I even Did, Start. Search. Fnd. and Delete same and removed up to 3 files that mentioned KB956572 Still no Go..

    However the very first time that I tried the following
    {1. Click "Start ", click "Run ", type: appwiz.cpl in the Open box, and then click "OK ".} I was able to continue and Deleted KB956572 by following steps 2,3 and 4. Then " ALL THAT I DID ,WAS AT THIS POINT WAS TO DO A NORMAL MANUAL MS UPDATE, JUST LIKE I ALWAYS DO.
    KB956572 Downloaded and asked me to Restart my computer It then Installed this update during this Restart procedure "I Have Never Seen This Step Before???" and all seems fine, I have been waiting a few days to make sure that it is going to hold but All Good So Far?????

    My question is this, are these two ways of removing Programs different from each other ??? Please answer my enquiry As I have a follow up Message Thanking you that I plan on sending You and your Supervisor For your Records and so you can close Incident SRX1099687208 TY Leonard Chowns
