In Outlook 2007 I try to open a Distribution List that appears to be too big. Error is: "Out of memory or system resources. Close some windows or programs and try again." Nothing helps. I want to open the DL in order to save it as plain text file so that I can import it to contacts. I have done it successfully with other DL's. The last list might have over 1000 contacts (646KB), but we never got warning that there was not enough memory when making the list.. Now it wont open though! :( Is it possible to enlarge the memory OL 2007 can use? Desperate as a lot of my clients details are in that D list.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS;)

Which Operating system and how much ram does the pc have?

Have you tried File->EXPORT and exporting your contacts that way?

    Thanks!
Windows Vista Home basic SP1, 1 Gb RAM, 32 bit OS.
The DL is made on other PC (network) and I need to import it to my contacts. So the list is not in any OL, but as .msg file on my desktop.
    Hope that makes sence?

Forgot to tell that I can drag the file into my contacts, but that creates an empty DL

I'm not sure it'll help with the list, but 1gig of ram is horribly small for Windows Vista.

Have you tried rebooting to clear out any cob webs and then try opening the file?

hmm, had no idea of that. Just bought this laptop and had Vista on it. It works all right though. Rebooting does not help with the file.

Also the list was created on same machine or its twin with same RAM. Other DL of simular size I have opened, filed as plain text and imported with success as Windows Tab separated values into contacts. Did you know that when you do this your first contact in the list is never imported? So this you should do manually. But that's beside the problem I have now!

I can open the DL file in Word pad, I can see the contact details are there, but there is also a lot of other stuff as it is not the right program to open the file with. Problem is I cannot read the file in Outlook.

On MS Help & Support I read simular DL situation:
"This is a limitation of distribution lists that are created and stored in a Microsoft Exchange Server mailbox store or in a personal folders (.pst) file.
    ...
You can create very large distribution lists that contain over a 1,000 contacts. However, these very large lists may not function as expected in Outlook.
    ...
Additionally, the distribution list limit is based on the property size limit of the computer that is running Exchange Server. The property size limit for an Exchange server is about 8 kilobytes (KB). The Exchange server stores all contact links in one property store. "

My question: is it possible to change the size limit of this property store? Maybe then the file can be opened and stored in OL?

    Grateful for any help,
    Irma

I doubt that is possible. It is likely to be a 'hard limit' set in the software.

As suggested in the Microsoft support article:

I read that article, but it is not an answer to my problem.. I cannot open the DL list at all. I am now reading on other websites about splitting PST folders, so hopefully then OL will have enough space to open. I am not sure if it will work, but will let you know if I find a solution. Hopefully soon, as I am losing a lot of my time trying to find a way to open a list of about 700 email addresses of clients that we had, all typed over from our paper files. We had made about 10 lists. By mistake we made them in OL distribution lists and not in categories in contacts. As a first user you cannot know that DL do not what you expect them to do: distribute email to large groups.. So only after something goes horibly wrong you'll find out that you need to use contact groups for this.

Yea... sorry I can't be of help. I have never (and most likely will never) use a MS product for mass mailings.

Thanks anyway. I have opened the DL in Wordpad as plain text file. There is a lot of unreadable stuff (so I cannot import it directly into Outlook), but it also displays the contact names and email addresses. So I am retyping those into a contact group in OL! A lot of work, but at least the list isn't lost :).

    ;) Irma
