The past Month or so my computer has had serious freezing problems. Shortly after starting up, it freezes without so much as a warning. I am not certain that freezes is the best way to describe what happens, because you can still use the mouse when it is in its "frozen" state.

There are no error messages or anything... I checked the taskmanager for suspicious looking tasks and couldn't find any. I am not sure, but I don't think it is a virus problem. Right now I am in safemode(with networking), that is the only way I can use my computer without it freezing starting up.

Anybody have any ideas what might be happening? Or maybe tips on how to FIGURE OUT what is happening?

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

The fact that you are able to run normally in Safe mode suggests either a driver problem or software that runs at startup in Normal mode.

Have you added any software, hardware or updated any drivers in the past month or so?

I suggest you download CodeStuff Starter and disable all startups listed and boot to Normal mode. If the freezing does not occur the culprit lies within the list of startup items and you will need to re-enable them one by one until the freezing reoccurs - the last item enabled is the culprit. If that fails to resolve the problem we need to look elsewhere.

Alright, I did what you said and I am now fairly certain that the issue stems from me installing a new graphics card. What could I do? Must I change the graphics card? Could I get new drivers?

Thanks a LOT for the help btw. I appreciate it a lot. :)

First step is to reinstall/update the graphics card drivers .....

Go to the manufacturer's web site and download the latest drivers for your card.

Uninstall the existing drivers and software through Add/Remove Programs - reboot and install the new drivers.

If the driver re-installation does not resolve the problem the graphics card may have a problem. If you still have the old card reverting to that without the freezing problem could point to the card itself, although it may still be a driver problem. Latest drivers are not always the best :).

That's a problem... I think "Safemode" disables my graphics card and I can't stay in normal mode long enough to get the drivers before it freezes.

In Safe Mode with Networking you have internet access to download the drivers. The existing drivers can be uninstalled in Safe Mode - on reboot into Normal mode Windows default drivers will be used - as they are in Safe Mode, so if it is a driver problem the computer should not freeze and you can install the new drivers.

It is late on this side of the pond and I am logging off shortly - will be back in the morning - my time :)
