In a previous thread on xp I have built a system using an ASRock K10N78 motherboard and a Phenon ll 920 processor with 8gb of memory

I have installed XP PRO 32 bit but only recognises 3.25gb of ram

    Now
I am confused which vista to buy
I know I need the 64 bit but which version.

Well all i need is Basic, but Home Premium, Business and Ultimate would be an option.

I have had a look on ebay for new, and also emailed some sellers, and a few of them have said about additional fees to microsoft.

I might be getting mixed up here, so what they are saying is i buy say Vista Home Premium and then i have to also pay a fee to microsoft, is this correct.

I am considering Home Basic 64 bit OEM on ebay

I think you should also read this article by Arie .....

Windows Vista: Which Edition Should You Get?
Personally I would not purchase software from eBay, however legitimate it may appear, but that is your decision of course. The extra cost referred to may be the cost of support. OEM versions of OS's are less expensive as it is up to the supplier, generally the computer manufacturer, to give support - MS will give none. However there is always WindowsBBS :)

    From your eBay link .....
You built a new system - I doubt that qualifies, but am in no position to give a definitive answer.

In the past I have bought OS's from Amazon and Dabs.com - my favourite supplier for all PC components.

One line you may like to pursue is the purchase of an Upgrade, but you will need to do your research first - sure that this aspect has been covered on the BBS so use the Advanced Search function.

The assistance I can give you is limited as I do not use Vista :)
