Hi , i have bought Nero 9 which includes a backup program .I am attempting to complete a full backup of the C drive .Before it will proceed a message tells me that Nero cannot lock the selected partition because it is being used by another program. I assume it is talking about Windows operating system being on the one partition with everything else . Is it ok to go ahead and do a full backup of the C drive including the OS or do i partition the drive with the os on one partition and the rest on the second partition .If so how do i partition a drive . thanks . Blocka

I do not have the program. Reading from the Nero website.
    What is Nero BackItUp 4?
Nero BackItUp 4 is a reliable, automated file backup program that lets you rest assured that your most important documents and files, including precious photos and videos, as well as music collections, are always safe.
It does not say it will backup the OS. True Image is one program that will do a complete backup.

With XP there is no way to repartition a drive using Windows once the OS is loaded (Vista is different, hence the question re. OS) - the two options you have are ......

Use Partitioning Software such as Partition Magic or Acronis Partition Manager - with these programs you can partition a drive with Windows installed in a single partition covering the whole drive. A backup of all important data is recommended - just in case :) .....

Or, make a clean install of XP and choose a partition of a size to suit, say 30 Gb. The remainder of the drive will show as unallocated space in Disk Management and a partition or partitions can be created in the unallocated space by right clicking in it > create partition.

If you choose to go down this latter route and need further guidance post back.

With Windows on one partition and your personal data on another you can use disk imaging software, as Russ suggested - Acronis True Image for example to make an image or mirror of the OS partition to an external drive or DVD plus a bootable CD to enable the image to be restored when required.

Splitting your data from the OS by using separate partitions is sound practice - if necessary the OS partition can be formatted without loss of data on the other partition(s). The image must be stored on an independent drive and not on another partition on the same drive to cover for drive failure.

If you have access to an external drive you could consider imaging the entire drive on, say, a weekly basis to maintain a current image, but as you have Nero 9 you already have the means to backup your data and a monthly image of the OS drive would suffice - preferably after Patch Tuesday - second Tuesday in the month.
