I'm a PC newbie and starting a self study on MS 2000 Professional and 2000 Server.
According to the Dell support site, my home desktop (Dimension T500, PIII 128M RAM) will support WIN2000 professional with some driver upgrades...no problem I'll give it a lash.

I have acquired an old AST Pentium 200MHz 64M RAM PC with Win98 installed and put a second 2G HD in to it. I plan to use it in dualboot and install the WIN2000 Server 120 day eval software I received in the MS Server2000 study guide.

Is there any chance it will work?

Can anyone point me in the direction for drivers etc for WIN2000.

I've never messed around with PC hardware before, but I dont mind trashing the AST PC in the process, if I learn something along the way.

Doubt it will even complete install on your old AST, but worth a try.

EdK - As for the drivers, you will need to check the mfgr's web site for each piece of hardware and locate the 2K drivers if they have any available.

Excellent idea to do this ahead of time and put any that will fit onto floppy disks.

And obenton probably had it right about server not loading on a PC with less than 128Mb memory. Here is what Microsoft has to say on the subject.

Newt and obenton, thanks for the input.

Here is what I found so far, might help other newbies like me..

I did a little more searching around the forums and found a great article by our illustrious moderator Eric Bursley on the subject.
Check it out, and follow the links http://www.windows-help.net/windows2000/98upgrade.shtml

The article links to the microsoft WIN2000 readiness analyser, which I downloaded and ran on the AST.
Funny, Microsoft says the only problem I will have is with the Standard PCI Graphics adapter, eventhough the PC does not meet some of the other min specs.

Another useful site I found to help me identify the manufacturer and model of this generic adapter was http://www.yourvote.com/pci/

No one told me you needed to be a super sleuth to work on a
    Microsoft upgrade!!
