I am hoping someone here might be able to tell me what might be the best way to get some photos off of my old laptop. I can't figure out how to do it. Would trying to save them to hard disc be a good way? If so how would I go about that? There are 3 folders with about 50mb in them on my desktop that I would like to get to my current computer, or on a disc or floppy or something. Thanks, TC

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

Several methods available depending on the facilities on the laptop .....

Copying to a floppy would be very time consuming given that the capacity of a floppy is only 1.4 Mb - is the current computer fitted with a floppy drive?

If the laptop has a CD burner burn to CD and copy from the CD to your current computer.

If the laptop has a USB port copy to a thumb drive or an external hard drive and then copy to your current computer.

Of the 3 methods burning to CD would be on a par with using a USB drive.
    Typo?

    >>>There are 3 folders with about 50mb in them on my desktop<<<

No typo, that is about how many photos are in the three folders on my desktop. The photos are large in size and I could go through and manipulate them to get smaller files, but the photoshop 4.0 which is on the computer is unbelievably awkward compared to what I am using now.
I just found a new flashdrive that I forgot I had. I have never used it, it says it will hold 2gb, is this something I could use to transfer the pictures to, and then get them on my current pc? Thanks for helping me out, I have been trying to figure out how to do it for a couple days now. TC

Now I am looking at this flash drive I have and the package says it does not support windows 98.

    I am
Desktop as in desktop on the laptop rather than a desktop computer? The source of my confusion :)
Yes, providing that the old computer has a USB port. Just copy the photo files from the old computer to the flash drive and then from the flash drive to the new computer.

By flash drive I take it that you are referring to a USB flash drive and not a flash card such as used by digital cameras.

The photos are in a few folders on the desktop of my old laptop. Sorry for not being to computer literate. I do have a USB flashdrive and on the packaging it says it does not support windows 98, so am I out of luck trying to use this flashdrive on windows 98 laptop?

For the moment, even if I could get a few of the pictures off of my old laptop it would be a great help. Since the time I quit using the old laptop I have gone to high speed, and am not even sure how to hook it up so I can go online with it. if I could I was thinking about just emailing a few of the pictures back to myself until I can figure out how to get all of them saved to a cd or something. My old laptop is a Dell inspiron 7000, and my new computer is a Dell dimension 3000.

Unfortunately Win98 is now so old that I am unable to find a flash drive that will work with it - Win Me, yes.

    One suggestion .....

Remove the hard drive from the computer and install it in an external enclosure which will connect to your new computer via USB. You should then be able to copy over any data that you require. I see you are in the States ....

PeteC, Just got back from the PC store. I got an external enclosure for my laptop harddrive. Thanks for letting me know about that, I wasn't aware something like that even existed. I haven't had a chance to hook it up, but it looks pretty straightforward. Plus I can then reformat it after I transfer what I need and then use it for storage. Cost $30. Thanks again, hope you are having a great day. Regards, TC

an easy way is to first compress the files in one envelope with winrar or winzip i guess
create two messenger accounts - same brand - say msn , yahoo or skype
simply then have the two computers hooked to the internet via a router
send the compressed file from the laptop messenger to the other computer and voila
If the computers are on the same router it will be fast
The handshake is over the computer - the transfer will be on your local network at high speed not on the internet
