Please forgive my ignorance but is it possible to take a HD from a problem PC, hook it up as a slave HD to a fully functional PC and do a clean install of XP onto the Slave with a view to putting it back in the problem PC once a clean install has been performed?

Just clutching at straws now ;-)

    Thanks in advance

Any attempt to install XP on a system other than the one it will be running on will cause problems. The hardware is likely to be totally different and drivers installed could cause problems on the other system.

You're probably better asking how to solve the issues you're having on the problem PC.
