Resolved Problem with automatic update version of IE8

I've been using IE8 RC 1 for awhile now with no problems. When automatic updates showed IE8 was ready to be installed I figured that the update version may have some final tweaks so i downloaded it. When I went to certain sites I would get a pop up saying Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have tried to find a pattern to see which sites were affected but could find no pattern. Especially disturbing was that I could not open any secured sites ( banking, credit card and other sites I pay bills on ). After much frustration I used System Restore to a point before the automatic update version of IE8 and everything is fine again. Any ideas? Thanks, Jack

 

Firewall settings?

HTTP uses port 80, HTTPS uses port 443.

EDIT:

HTTP is usually used for normal browsing, HTTPS is used for secure browsing (payments/banking and others). Your firewall is the first place I'd look.

What firewall are you using?

 

I don't want to mess with anything right now as I'm doing my taxes and need access to the banking and other secure sites today. I will post either later today or tomorrow. Thank you, Jack

 

Was going to post the day after taxes but, as they say, life gets in the way. Have just been on the computer a few times since the original problem. Several updates in the last ten days from Microsoft and today I downloaded IE8 final again and now no problems. Works fine. I'm not sure if one of the updates may have corrected something, or just what happened, all I know is now it's OK. Thanks for your help, Jack
