fdisk "not recognized as an internal or external command"?

    hello friends,

    trying to partition my hard disk through command line. opened command prompt and typed fdisk and then enter. it says "fdisk is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. my version of xp is 5.1.2600

    any way to get around please?

    Why are you trying to do this with the command line?

    If it's your only drive then partition/format during the reinstall

    If it's an additional drive use disk manager (start->run->diskmgmt.msc)

    i have got only one drive. i don't have the installation cd. i tried partitioning it through diskmgmt but in vain. it doesn't let me partition the single drive i have got.

    Ok, there are various freeware utilities around, you could try Super Fdisk Free or google for others

    That makes sense: you can't partition your system drive with Windows 'build in' tools, you'll need a 3rd party app.

    But be warned; if you don't have a backup & don't have a system disk you are playing with fire!

    Thanks Arie,

    I should have pointed that out. I assumed (note to self never assume) jdsony was wanting to wipe the drive before givingit to someone else.
