    A computer may be infected without a User’s knowledge using YouTube, MySpace, etc. There have been instances where malware creators realized that malicious software can be hidden in YouTube files, and used this avenue to distribute malicious code.

    However, we can assume the security personnel of YouTube is aware of this issue, and is doing everything possible to find and remove malicious files.

    At your end, make sure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware programs are up-to-date with the latest definitions.

    Now, if your son engages in P2P file sharing, all of this seemingly free software is not without risk.

    Even when the program used for P2P file sharing is not infected, sharing files from uncertified sources can allow malicious code to get a hold of your system. Actually, many of the files available for download from peer-to-peer networks are deliberately infected.

    Let’s do the following:

    Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM)
    Save the program to the Desktop
    Close all Windows, including this one. (Print the instructions first)

    On the Desktop, double-click mbam-setup.exe to install the program, and follow the prompts
    • If an update is found, MBAM will download and install the latest.
    • Click OK
    At the main program window
    • Make sure the following is checked: Perform Quick Scan
    • Click: Scan (The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.)
    • When the scan completes, a message box appears, click OK

    At the main Scanner screen:
    • Click on: Show Results
    • A screen displaying the malware found shows
    • Make sure everything found is checked, and click: Remove Selected
    • When the disinfection is complete, you may be prompted to Restart. Please do so.
    • When MBAM finishes removing the malware, a log opens in Notepad
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab.
    ~~~~
    Please provide the MBAM report in your reply.
    On your initial concern:
    You currently have AVG Free 8.0 installed?
    Do you no longer want to use this AV program?
    well it says i have it...i cannot find this program anywhere...i tried to delete this a few months ago, i was going to put something else on here and when i go into my control panel to add/remove and clicked on avg to delete it--it tells me INSTALLATION FAILED.
    then i click to see details and it says:
    Installer initialization failed due to following error:
    Error: @AvgErrorCode_0x0253 %FILE% = "C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8 "
    @AvgErrorCode_0x0020
    therefore it is not working properly nor can i remove it??
    Glad you got AVG8 installed!!
    I am pressuming that you ran a Scan when you got it back working.
    Now that you have the opportunity, also do the following:
    Reboot to Safe Mode:
    • Restart your computer.
    • When the machine reboots, tap the F8 key before Windows starts
    • You are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
    • Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
    • Press Enter to boot into Safe Mode.
    Next, run AVG8 and report whatever it identifies (if anything) in your reply.
