I have a Dell computer that has been used very little even though it
is a few years old with legal XP Pro on it and I am 99 percent sure
the motherboard went bad. What will I have to do to put the
hard drive into another computer and make it run with my
    installed software ?

I dont really understand all the licensing stuff and in this case
I dont care if I buy another XP, I just want my stuff to
work as installed currently on my existing hard drive.

If anyone knows of really smart consultants that I can pay
to call up and talk to about this stuff I would appreciate
    any referrals.
    Thanks
    Scott

May be a bit tricky because Dell installs some(lots) of propriatary items on their machines. May not be compatable with any other types, and even then, might have to be the same model.
Had trouble with Dells before, so I switched brands just for that reason.

It won't work unless you put the disk in an identical computer.

However, you can also put it in any comp, boot in Safe Mode, go to Add-Remove hardware and remove all the existing hardware leftover from the previous install. Then reboot and have the new comp driver disk handy. Load the chipset drivers for the motherboard first, then video, audio & the rest.

You will then have to re-activate the XP installation by calling Microsoft and explaining what you did.

It would be faster and better to just buy a new comp with XP on it and load the software that you want.

    @TonyT,

Don't you have to do a "sysprep" before you move the HDD to another computer?

If it was better, that is what I would be doing.
I have installed software that is impossible to replace that is the
reason I am willing to pursue the extra effort to get my drive and
installed operating system and programs running on another computer.
I dedicate the rest of my life to putting microsoft out of business.
Since 1987 or 1988 they have purposefully made things more difficult
and more expensive for the computing world in the interest of
their increased profits. Computers were supposed to be tools
to make our lives easier and now I cant do half the stuff I used
to do ten or 15 years ago although I admit I can do a lot of new
stuff that wasnt possible back then either. There is no reason
we shouldnt be able to back up and restore applications and data
    like in the old days.
