    [Inactive] All kinds of issues with google, etc.

    So, a few days ago I noticed that Google search results were correct (i.e., it was returning just ads and not the proper results). Now I've noticed that even when the results appear properly, the links are often either (a) re-directed or (b) don't work. In addition, things on my computer are appearing...off. For example, my system tray has significantly less items than before (e.g., my AVG doesn't show up there).

    I've run AVG, spy bot and malwarebytes so far.

    I've downloaded DDS to my desktop, but can't get it to run properly. Perhaps I have something running that is "script-blocking ", but I'm not sure. I've exited AVG, but can't tell if it is running in the background. When I run DDS, I see a small black box open up briefly and then disappear.

    Any thoughts on how, as an initial matter, I can get DDS to run so I can post the log here for someone to look at?

    Thank you all in advance for any help you can provide...

    Welcome to WindowsBBS, chizz1!

    We need to get a comprehensive report of what is present in your system. Let's see if you have better luck with the following:

    Please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT)
    • Save it to the Desktop
    • Double click on RSIT.exe to run the program
    • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen
    • Once the tool finishes, two logs open. Log.txt is maximized , and Info.txt is minimized. (The logs are also contained in C:\rsit)
    Please provide the RSIT: Log.txt and Info.txt reports in your reply.

    You may need to do consecutive posts (one after the other) right in this thread, if the logs are too long.

    If the above also does not work for you, rename rsit.exe as you download it, and not after it is on the computer.

    To rename rsit.exe as you download it (using Internet Explorer), select to Save the download
    In the Save as prompt:
    Save in: Desktop
    File name: tisr.exe
    Double-click tisr.exe to run the program, and follow the rest of the instructions above.

    Please make sure you temporarily disable real-time protection applications as they may interfere with running programs needed to eradicate infections. Check the list in How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs for any programs run.

    Next, download ComboFix
    Save to the Desktop <<< Important!!
    • Now, close all open windows
    • Double-click combofix.exe to run the program
    • Follow the prompts.
    • If the option is offered, it is in your best interest to allow the download and install of the Recovery Console when prompted.
    • When told that the RC is installed correctly, press YES to continue scanning for malware.
    • ComboFix will run. Please don't click on the window while the program is running, it may cause your system to stall.
    • CF may reboot the computer and resume running when it restarts.
    • When finished, a log, ComboFix.txt, is produced.

    Please provide the contents of the ComboFix report in your reply.

    Allow the Spybot change. However, you needed to temporarily disable protection applications. They interfere with the process of getting rid of malware.

    Need to check a Registry key...

    Please highlight and Copy the text inside the code box below:

    Code:
    reg query  "HKLM\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32" /s >look2.txt
    start notepad look2.txt
    exit
    cls
    Click Start > Run, and, in the Open area, type: cmd
    Press: Enter to open a command window.
    Right-click by the blinking cursor in the command window and select: Paste
    The command window will close and a log will open on your Desktop.

    Please post the contents of the look2.txt in your reply.

    Thanks again for getting back to me on this. I am currently traveling and unable to take the recommended actions while I am away, but will do so as soon as I return (which should be Sunday night). I'll post the relevant log then.

    Let’s see if Kaspersky picks up any infected files. There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we can analyze the information on the report and determine whether further action is needed.

    Please close all windows, and temporarily turn off the real time scanner of your antivirus program.
    Then, use Internet Explorer, and do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner
    Click: Scan Now
    Then click: Accept
    The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.
    • Once the files are downloaded, click on: Next
    • Under select a target to scan, select: My Computer
    When the scan is done, any infection is displayed.
    • Click on: View scan report
    To obtain the report:
    Click on: Save Report As

    Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop

    In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar

    In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
    Then, click: Save

    ~~~~
    Please provide the contents of the Kaspersky Online Scanner report in your reply.
    Also, give us an update. Are you still having the same problems?
    Hey Aaflac. I ran the Kaspersky scan and I believe everything looks clean. I've posted the log below. The issues I was previously having have cleared up and the virus scans aren't picking anything up. Does everything look good to you too? Anything else you'd recommend other than running AVG and spybot? I really do appreciate your help greatly - you've been a lifesaver.
    Andrew
    The malware also includes an autorun type component, so, please connect any external/flash drives, and leave them installed until the repairs are completed. If not, these drives will remain infected and can re-infect this computer, or others.
    Please download Flash_Disinfector
    Save it to the Desktop.
    Double-click on Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it, and follow the prompts. Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
    Flash_Disinfector creates a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive that is plugged in when the program is run. Don't delete this folder. It serves to block auto-loading infections from creating the files needed to infect other drives and systems.
    ~~~~
    Next, please highlight and Copy the text inside the code box below:

    Code:
    reg delete  "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{d083a786-ba9d-11dd-89c3-0016fe91caad}\Shell\AutoRun\command" /va /f
    Click Start > Run, and, in the Open area, type: cmd
    Press: Enter to open a command window.
    Right-click by the blinking cursor in the command window and select: Paste
    Press: Enter
    Close the command window.

    ~~~~
    Please run a new RSIT scan and post the new Log.txt in your reply.
    It appears you are running more than one AntiVirus program:
    AV: AVG Anti-Virus Free
    AV: Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition
    If this is the case, it is not a good idea. Having more than one of these programs active in memory opens the door to potential conflicts between the programs, uses additional resources, and may result in diminished detection capabilities, or cause false virus alerts.
    It may also be the reason for letting through the malware in your system!!
    The best thing to do is uninstall the AV programs, except the one you choose to keep, and let it do its job.
    To uninstall whichever programs you do not want to keep.
    Go to: Start > Run, type: control
    Press OK
    Double-click on: Add/Remove Programs
    On the list of Currently Installed Programs, look for and uninstall the programs you do not want to keep by selecting the entry and clicking on Remove:
    Next, search for and delete the folder related to the program. It should be in:
    C:\Program Files\
    Then, restart the computer.
    ~~~~
    Let's take care of the Java entry in your reports. It is out of date...

    Please download JavaRa
    [IMG]

    Unzip it to the Desktop.

    This program checks if your computer has the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE). If the version installed is superseded by a newer version, the program downloads and installs the newer version by running Java's update program.

    JavaRa then allows you to remove all possible older versions of the JRE program. This ensures the security of your computer is enhanced and also creates some extra space on your hard disk

    Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.

    • In the prompt that appears, select: Search for Updates
    • Next select: Update using Sun Java’s website
    • Click: Search
    • In Sun Java’s website, download: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12

    Note: Currently, as part of its update, Java also provides for the installation of the Google Toolbar. You can decline its installation of by unchecking "Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer ", then click Next to continue.

    • Back to JavaRa, click on Remove Older Versions
    • Click Yes when prompted.
    • When JavaRa is done, a notice appears that a logfile was produced.
    • If you wish to see the log, click OK, for it to show. (The log is also saved as C:\JavaRa.log)
    • Use the X on the upper right side to close JavaRa
    • Next, restart the computer to complete the changes.

    ~~~~
    Next, open Notepad (Start > Run > in the Open field type: notepad)
    Click: OK
    Copy/paste the text inside the code box below to Notepad:
    Code:
    File::
    C:\RECYCLER
    Save as CFScript.txt <<< Important!!
    Change the Save as type to: All Files
    Save it to the Desktop
    Now, using the left mouse button, drag the CFScript.txt >>> onto >>> ComboFix.exe, and drop it.
    ComboFix runs a scan, and may reboot when it finishes. This is normal.
    CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix while it is running. It may cause it to stall.
    When finished, a log is produced: ComboFix.txt
    ~~~~
    Please provide the contents of the new ComboFix log in your reply.

    I've tried to follow your directions as closely as possible, but certain Symantec files won't allow me to delete them...let me know if you want to know the details of those specific files. The combo log is below. Thank you again for all of your help...

    The file names are:

    PSLuComServer_3_1.DLL
    MSVCP71.DLL
    AluSchedulerSvc
    AluSchedulerSvcRes.dll
    MSVCR71.DLL

    It says that they cannot be deleted: access is denied. "Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use. "
