Hi all, I'm brand new here and in need of some advice.

I actually discovered this board while trying to research my problem....which is (similar to someone elses)....

I recently bought a new hard drive because my old drive decided it was going to die out on me. I installed it and had no problems getting my computer up and running.

All of a sudden though, I'm unable to create new folders in some pre-existing folders and I don't understand why. I've even reformatted the hard drive in an attempt to fix my problem, but it still persists. In some cases this problem prevents me from installing new software due to the fact that it wants to create folders inside of the main folder.

I get a "Unable to create new folder - Access is Denied" error.

I've never ever had this problem before with my old drive and I have no idea how to fix it. It's driving me crazy...has anyone else been able to fix this problem? have this problem?

    HELP!

    1. What brand & model hard drive?
    2. Formatted with what file system (ntfs, fat32, etc)?
    3. What operating system?

Sorry about the slow reply...been away.

My hard drive type is a Western Digital 320 GB - Model: WD3200JBRTL
It was formatted in NTFS format
and I'm working with Windows XP.

This problem, I've discovered only occurs on the D: drive. The C: drive is fine and I have no problems creating folders anywhere (including inside other folders), but on the D: drive it only allows me to sometimes make folders.

I usually store all of my programs on the D: drive and try to leave the C: drive mostly empty so it's kinda confusing me. I have it split 80/240...the 240 being on the D: drive.

I only have a single administrator (which is me) and I'm just confused as to why I wouldn't be allowed to create folders on my own computer. It's almost as if it write-protects specific folders and the drive at times.

I've run ScanDisk as well thinking maybe I somehow got some bad sectors on my drive, but it came up good. Any ideas?

Sounds like Windows file protection or 3rd party security program at work.

IMHO, it's better to install operating system and software programs on the same partition (C:\) and use a second partition or drive solely for data files, including My Documents, which can be moved there via its Properties dialog. The exception being very large game software.

Your 80 GB C:\ is plenty for all your programs.
