Just opened up my new Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop Windows XP Pro SP3 this morning. Took care of antivirus/security stuff first and then proceeded to Windows Update and spent 30 or 45 minutes getting that done - all installed successfully.

Shortly after, I kept getting a notification shield in the lower right that "Updates are ready . . . ." - the update in question is Security Update Windows XP SP3 (KB 952069) - relates to Windows Media Player. If I click install, the install takes place and then a few minutes later the notification shield is back with the same security update. I went to Windows Update and checked my history and sure enough that particular one shows up as being installed about a dozen times today. (My other machine is XP Home without SP3 and the security update installed fine on it in Dec.)

I found a number of Google hits with a few "fixes" but only one I felt I wanted to try - uninstalled Windows Media Player, reinstalled it, and then reinstalled the Security Update. I have restarted the machine several times but always the same.

I have contacted Microsoft via phone and then Dell via chat with no real luck. The Dell rep finally gave me the same phone number I had used for Microsoft. Any ideas?

Hi virginia. Your problem is usually caused by Windows Update incorrectly notifying you that an update is available even though its already installed. That can happen sometimes. When the yellow shield icon shows up click the custom option and click next. Now uncheck the checkbox for the security update. Another window will popup saying updates that aren't selected won't be installed. Click the checkbox in that window that says don't notify me about this update again and click close. As long as you hide the update and tell Windows Update to not notify you again about that update you should be fine. Also please follow these steps. Click Start< My Computer. Navigate to the following directory, C:/Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Download. This folder is where Windows Update downloads the system updates for your computer. Delete all the contents inside the Download folder but not the folder itself. Then empty the recycle bin. After thats done reboot the computer. Check for updates again and see if theres any change in the computers behavior. :)

    Evan,

It worked. Your instructions were right on. When I went to the Windows Update site, it told me I had one update hidden.

I assume that is the one I just turned off and that one will probably always show up as "Hidden ".

Also - I'm not getting the Notification Shield in the lower right.

Great. Windows Update will show that message saying that you have hid important updates but that behavior is by design. As long as you aren't getting notified anymore about that update then thats what matters. I am glad I was able to help you out. :)
