    Clear temp internet files!

    Clear windows temp files!

Reboot see if you still have the error!

Cleanup first maybe the rat is in the trash, or when the trash is gone perhaps to find him easier!!!! Smile!

I imagine Daizy's link will help you out. If not, try setting the pagefile to system managed and try that for a while (as the link suggests, anyway).

In any case, if you have been seeing this error a few times (or any errors that require a memory dump, for that matter), you may find that these .dmp files are starting to accumulate.

Search for *.dmp and delete all these files--they will be of little or no use to you and they just take up space.

Right-click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup and recovery Settings button. Leave the check mark next to "Write an event to the system log ", but uncheck the Admin Alert (unless you are on a network) and uncheck the Automatically Restart option.

In the memory dump section below, choose "None ". This will prevent these dump files from being written and will give you a blue screen with an error number instead of restarting when an error occurs. Certainly more usefull to know the error!

Gee, Daizy , I feel kind of dumb now! When I said it out loud to myself, I knew what you meant. Just obsessed with "services" lately, I guess.

    Thanks.

    Scandisk:
Double-click My computer. Next, right-click on the disk you want to check and select "Properties" from the options menu. Now, choose the Tools menu option. There you will find the Error-checking utility. Click the "Check Now" button to begin checking your hard disk for errors.

If you like to use the command prompt, the equivalent command for ScanDisk is "chkdsk ".

Just an addendum to Daizy's post:

There are 2 check boxes in that final disk check dialog box. The first allows you to actually fix any problems found and will require a reboot.

The second is the actual, thorough surface check. That will take quite a while to complete, so be aware of that before you start it.

From your 1st message it looks like this was transfered from another thread or from offline communication!

What makes you think you have a paging problem?

The printout you send dosn't indicate it to me, pretty general!

What are the symtoms? What are you trying to cure?

All the rest of the help has been excellent but seems not to hit the nail on the head yet.

Verdi I have been doing this a long time! (Computer professional) new to BBS though. Computers have been good to me as a career. So I began here (the BBS) to give back a little!

So you will see in most of my assistance a request to clean up! That has sevral advantages! You've heard of "throwing the baby out in the wash" well this relates to "throwing the rat out in the trash "! Smile!

If you have an inconsistant or non descriptive problem, can't quite put your finger on it! Or it don't happen very often or with no pattern. Eratic! Hard to repeat! Then the first thing to do is cleanup! Some times it uncovers the real problem!

One thing I need to ask also, did this problem begin after you installed a new program or had a virus or did any kind of internet update?

Back to cleaning! If you clean up you could be removing a virus in these files, a bad script or just a bad or corupted file in either the windows temp folder or in Temp internet files! When you think you have a virus or even before a normal maintenance Virus scan. If you clean 1st you can potentially get rid of it this way or at least remove thousands of useless files that it is not nessesary to scan for virus's anyway!

I know you said you had done a cleanup but lets review the correct way to do this!

Do what Abraxas suggested set the page file to system managed and find the *.dmp files and delete them!

    Now reboot into safe mode!

In safe mode use my computer and browse to c:\documents and settings\????! The ??? should be the names you log in as! Probably c:\documents and settings\verdi

Enter this folder and look local settings enter it and look for folder temp, enter temp

Once there do a ctrl a to highlight all and delete them, even if it says they are programs! We are in safe mode from a fresh reboot they are totally useless! If it says there are hidden or readonly folders or files delete them also, or it may give directions to change the view in order to see these files, if so change the view and delete these also!

Do this for each user name listed here even administrator, some like default user may not have a temp folder ignore those!

Then browse to c:\windows\temp Ctrl a tag and delete these!

    Through browsing exit to desktop!

Go to control panel-internet options and click delete files, check the box that says all offline! On this page I usually clear the history at bottom of screen! History is normally not a problem but can have some old useless items. This can be done from Internet explorer but we want it closed hence the control panel!

Now still in control panel go to administrative tools-event viewer! Rt click and clear all events in all 3 catagories. Save them if you want! We do this so that on the next full boot we want to look at the current errors that come here now, immediately when windows comes back in full mode!

Now last thing! Don't forget this! EMPTY RECYCLE BIN!!!!

So now reboot to full mode! Go imediately to the event viewer and look for errors! Tell us about them!

Run Adaware with the latest signatures! If you don't have it get it at http://www.lavasoft.de/

Set it to deep and do all drives except a: and the cd! Delete all it finds!

You said you had scanned for viruses but did you have all the settings to do a deep scan such as all files including compressed etc.

NOW if you still have a problem we have allready addressed the obvious and have a clean place to look! Additionally you will probably notice a slightly faster bootup and maybe a performance boost and usually a boost in stability! At least after the remaining problemis corrected!

This looks harder and more complex than it really is! Do it!

Sorry so long a message! Most times I write with hopes it helps someone else also! And I don't know your experience level so please don't think I talk down to you!

    At you service,
    Mike

Mike - you might want to seriously consider adding SpyBot Search & Destroy to Ad-aware for spyware detection/removal. They will both find stuff the other will miss. Also, spybot will allow (if you want) removal of other local information you might want to purge periodically.

I owe you and anyone who tried the cleanup I posted to you, an apology! The Local Settings folder is hidden! I always unhide mine when I install, too used to it myself I guess!

To unhide got to control panel-folder options-view in the Advanced Settings you will see a selection to "Show Hidden files and folders" select this! Most users should set it back to hide when finished!

Now you will see this folder when you browse to C:\Documents and Settings! Now you can clear them! All unhidden system folders appear dim compared to the others!

Additionally, never cleanup like this in full mode (as opposed to safe mode) if you have been up for a while and have used programs or installed something! This is the reason I suggest safe mode! Then do it without running other programs! Go straight to safe mode and do the process then boot back to full mode! If you do these in full mode do so immediately after a reboot!

Additional reasons for safe mode! Of course many files and drivers are not loaded in safe mode like you will notice the generic VGA video driver is loaded by looking at the screen. Virus scanners, firewalls, network, Internet (and maybe some things that go bump in the night) do not load! Some times you catch them in a vulnerable condition that in full windows may not be so, and can deal with them!

Warning! Do not empty Temp folders in any "program" directory! Only the ones I direct in the cleanups! Say you have c:\Important Program\money\temp! Leave that Temp alone!

Some may try a shortcut to cleaning temps by searching for *.tmp. This will for sure get the *.tmp that are not hidden or an open file or a shared file. If these are true temps they will normally delete in safe mode! But the biggest error here is that *.tmp is not the only junk that can be in the TIFs or Temp folders! There can be files of any type or name in the temp folders and usually are! I have seen a temp folder with almost 100,000 temp files!

Now Verdi back to you specifically!

You need to specifically clean up C:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Temp!

    paging error progress

have done safe mode temp removals in C:\documents and settings/john and found...
    26 folders
    354 files
45.6mb ...........Phew found nothing in default user, and cleared windows temp, emptied recycle bin and rebooted in normal mode. went straight to event viewer and found 2 errors...

service control manager = properties said "The upload manager service failed due to following error: the exe, program that this service is configured to run in does not implement the service ".

& DCOM = properties said "this service cannot be started in safe mode ".

also went to scandisk (chkdisk) systen rebooted and did it, when i got back to windows i also checked for defrag but not needed... only 8% frazzled :)

have yet to leave online for a while to see if system will shut down, wil do tomorrow.

tonight however, as i went through link in outlook email, it took almost a minute to open win bbs, then also another minute to reach this page to send reply... why?
i am running amd 1600 with 128 mb ram and have adsl broadband icon says...576.0 kbps
have gone to BT speedtest site, and d/load is always within time, but streaming video has always puzzled me ...

    Broadband video streaming test

The following links allow you to test video streaming at a number of different streaming rates, using different protocols. USB customers should be able to stream using both TCP and UDP protocols, Ethernet customers may only be able to receive video using the TCP protocol.

    Clip description Streaming protocol
    TCP UDP
    384kbit/s 384k TCP 384k UDP
    300kbit/s 300k TCP 300k UDP
    256kbit/s 256k TCP 256k UDP
    200kbit/s 200k TCP 200k UDP
    150kbit/s 150k TCP 150k UDP

tcp video - no prob, udp video nothing and BT have never told me why ?

anyhow, thats enough for now, will let you know what happens when i stay online tomorrow.

    ChEeRs :)

I am begining Dinner in a few momments so I will be back in about 1 hr!

But quick annswer for slow connect! I don't know! I have never seen a cleanup do anything like that! Usually is faster!

It could be a fluke or just a surge of congestion on the the WWW!

I would defrag 8% when I went to bed! Don't seem much but problem is we don't know which files are actually fragmented! But it is not your slowdown problem!

We need to know if this cured your problems D/L email?

Reboot when you can and review any symptoms!

But you did not mention Aaware! You really need to run it!

If you haven't then you may get a surprise!!

    Back 1 hr!

    Mike
