I was stupid enough to disable the autorun.inf in the registry, as recommended to prevent scripts running from removable sources. Unfortunately this also prevented the DVD deck from being seen by Explorer although the BIOS can see it. I removed the changed key from the registry as detailed in the Windows Secrets article but this has not restored my DVD deck to a usable state, and Vista says ' The driver for this device cannot be loaded'.
Would someone be kind enough to list the keys that are needed in:
    HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\InfileMapping\Autorun.inf ?
All I have in mine now is REG_SZ (Value not set)

    Thanks,
    Roger:(

I don't have Autorun.inf in that location. Do you know what puts it there?

Is the drive listed in Device Manager or Disk Management.

If you do a System Restore it will replace the registry.

    Windows Secret...mmm :D

    Hi Matt,
Thanks for replying. I have now managed to get the DVD deck back into Vista, surprisingly enough by going to the on-line help, finding the problem, and clicking the "Fix It Now" button. This reset the CD filters I think.
I still have to work out how to get the auto-run capability back, because the autorun.inf blocker still in operation installers on a CD or a DVD won't work. The MS article ID: 867715 explains it all, but I haven't had time up to now to plough through it!

Probably not the solution, but search in Help and Support for Autorun. There are settings for "Autoplay ".

The procedure in the MS Article fixed it, and shows the steps to disable autoplay in the chosen, or all, drives.
