Everything I try to open seems to take longer than I feel they should. It is with all apps, folders and programs. I have defraged both drives. I have ran the malwarebytes scan and came up clean. :) I have paid subscription to Windows OneCare live and Spyware Doctor with Anti-virus. Both products Full Systems' scans' come uot clean, no infections. I also have run a full RegCure scan and repair. The last thing I did was to run a complete CClean scan and clean. I fell that my system should be respectfully quick. All parts are realitivly new. Any thoughts?

Hi steveo65. Follow these steps to make your computer faster.

    Please do the following:

    1. Click Start< Control Panel< Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any programs that you don't use.
    2. While in the add/remove programs window click the button that says add/remove windows components and uncheck the checkboxes next to Indexing Service, MSN Explorer, Windows Messenger and click ok when you are done.
    3. Disable any Windows Services that you don't use by following Black Vipers Services Guide.
    4. Download and run ATF Cleaner and select all the checkboxes in the program then hit the empty selected button, http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html.
    5. Run Disk Cleanup, Start< All Programs< Accessories< Sytstem Tools< Disk Cleanup. When its done calculating how much free space you can save make sure you check all the checkboxes except for compress old files.
    6. Click Start< Right Click My Computer and click Properties. Click the advanced tab< Under performance hit settings< click advanced again and under virtual memory click change< Make sure your harddrive is selected and select the option that says system managed size and click the set button. Now Click ok on all the windows to close them out and reboot the computer.
    7. Do you have Windows XP Service Pack 3 installed? If you don't then download it from here.
    8. I see you have Regcure installed. Registry Cleaners do more harm than good to a computer. They can make your computer unbootable if you delete the wrong registry key. Regcure is considered a scam and will not give you any increase in your computers speed. I would suggest that you remove Regcure immediatly and read this article, Why I Don't Use Registry Cleaners.

Let me know if your computer is faster after performing the above steps. :)

Normally a fresh install will get your computer at its top speed because it doesn't have any programs or other services bogging down the computer. How much RAM does your computer have? Have you uninstalled RegCure? Are you using any third party firewalls? Do you have Norton or Mcafee security suites installed?

    Actually getting worse

 Regcure is gone. I have 4GB of ram installed (3.2GB recognized). I have Windows Live OneCare and Spyware Doctor with Anti-virus installed. The OneCare uses its own firewall. I have also started getting multiple "this program has encountered an error and needs to close" errors latley. There are 3 that happen the most. Service Exicutible, Internet Explorer and Office Outlook.

Try shutting down all backrgound programs that are running in the system tray in the taskbar including your security applications and then try using the computer for a while. Also look in task manager< processes tab and note how many processes your computer is running. After you do that go to Answers That Work and click on the Task List. Look through the list and see if their are any processes that you can stop from running.

Sorry it took me so long to get back. Been busy. Answers that work helped and the system seems to be better after removing some start up programs. Thanks for your help.

From the title I immediately thought of a deficiency of RAM. If it doesn't have enough RAM for the programs (include startup/background programs) you have two alternatives. Reduce the background programs or increase the amount of RAM. You have reduced the amount of background programs/services. As you said, it is better now, but not like new.

Even if you get more RAM, watch that you don't fill that up with background stuff. People get large amounts of RAM, most probably just to run the stuff in the background.

If you want to run on a modest amount of RAM, be ready for regular "clean outs" of background stuff and the clean-outs are never usually thorough enough.

I never baulk at a reformat if it saves me the time waiting for programs to run the way they are supposed to.

    Matt

I ran the WMD from the link in your post ant it said that I failed some of the tests. It also said that it could not handle 4GB of memory. Any thoughts?
