Microsoft Word 2000 SR-1 hangs when opening with a message at the lower left corner: "requesting virus scan..." Nothing happens. I have used this program before with no problems. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium and Norton Security. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there, I haven't used Norton AV for a while but in the Options there is a section where you can turn off scanning of MS Office documents and files. Try turning this off and see if it corrects your problem. Scanning of Office documents etc., can really slow down the opening of these files.

Thanks, but this didn't work. I've changed those settings, rebooted, and the same happened. I've also uninstalled the Microsoft Works Suite 2000 setup, Microsoft Works 6.0 and Microsoft Word 2000 SR-1. After rebooting, I reinstalled all the above and still have the same problem. Perhaps it may yet be a virus, since the day this started I wanted to open a document sent by email and got the "requesting virus scan..." on the lower left part of the screen. Sometimes you just want to go to the library to avoid all of these issues!

Just checked programs that were installed around the time that this problem started. I found an installed program for Microsoft Office Live Update that was recommended by Microsoft to install. I uninstalled this program and the problem is solved! It must have been a compatibility issue.

Good news, thanks for posting back. For everyone's info, what was the program that was causing the problem?

"Microsoft Office Live Addin" I think was the program.
