I would like a sound file to play. How do I direct it so that it is NOT thru WMV and a video as well.

Depends on the sound file type and what other software you have but usually right clicking on the sound file will give you an "Open With" then selecting the program and ticking "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" will fix it however, if it's only one file that causes the problem then perhaps a shortcut is preferable?

I want to direct many sounds via the system audio that produces the sound instantly when I, thru the control panel and "sounds and audio devices ", select a sound and test it. Is obviously a system feature not a additions sound app such as "Nero" or Roxio

Ok, those are .wav files, if the sounds you also wish to play are .wav then you shouldn't have a problem. If however, they are in a different format (eg MP3) then you need to set up an association as I described in my previous post.
