Do the speakers work on another computer? Did you disconnect the speakers in the time before they broke, and reconnect them incorrectly?

Andy, I'm not familiar with that particular laptop but I'd start with looking at any sound settings on your system. It may be possible to disable the built in Mic and Speakers but still allowing headphone/mic sockets to work.

    Fair enough...

Any chance some foreign matter is shorting out your sound sockets (therefor overriding onboard Mic/Speakers)?

If your laptop is reasonbly clean it's unlikely but a squirt with a can of compressed air in each socket is worth a try. Failing that I'll leave it to others to offer assistance.

this is a long shot and since the headphones work it might not apply but i guess no harm in checking.

did u check in the Sound and audio devices/ voice tab that ur sound card is the actual device used once i had a somewhat similar problem and turned out the modem was set as play back and recording device.
