I like it when I play a CD in my car to be able to see the name of the tune on the CD player. So when I create audio CD's I want to use software that supports CD Text. That's how I came to be using RealPlayer Version 11.1.

In addition to using RealPlayer, I also have started using, or trying to use, lightscribe CD's.

So I opened my box of Verbatim CD-R LightScribe disks and tried to burn a 50 minute CD. It errored out with no error message other than saying it had an error. Disk trashed. New disk, new error. I tried again... this time I was told the software was not the latest so I downloaded the latest... that download told me it was the same as what I had running.

Finally, I took a non-LightScribe CD-R (Sony) and burned the CD to it and, after burning the LightScribe label, copied the Sony CD to the Verbatim LightScribe CD and all is well with the world.... except I ruined 4 LightScribe CD-R trying to get the software to hook up with the hardware and do what they are supposed to do.

I did try burning at a slower rate versus automatic rate decided by the software with no help. I did reboot one in the process just to reload the brains... no brain improvement. I switched burning from my lightscribe burner to a DVD/CD burner (not lightscribe capable). I have also tried using Nero but no joy with Nero.

The reason for opening this thread is to solicit possible solutions to what may be a software deficiency or possibly some kind of defect with the LightScribe disks. I'm not tied to RealPlayer but I do want to have CD Text on my audio CD's. Software problem, disk quality problem, I don't know. Seems to work on the non-lightscribe media OK.

Hi Jim, you have a, may we say complex issue here, could be more than one reason for your problems. If you like to have the titles and artists displayed you need to enable "tagsâ€
Regarding LightScribe this can be a very tricky situation and may need lots of experimenting. Just to give you a example a friend of mine and myself we both have the ASUS Burner (not sure of the model number right now) we bought them at the same time installed the LightScribe Software (very important) in general I have no problems he had nothing but problems like yourself he could burn normal CD-DVD’s but not the LightScribe Media changed to LightOn and the first one was no good neither second one works just fine never found an answer to it. I have found that some Media Brands are better than others and also find a difference in + or - . Never do the LightScribe before the Data burning. Up to now my most reliable Media is "Melody" and the worst is RIDATA. I also have used the Nero LightScribe it is OK but personally I prefer the LightScribe it comes with many more Templates for your design options.
I have never been a fan of RealPlayer as it was in the past not compatible with Nero, can’t speak for now as I have never tried again.
I use Nero, WMP 11, Media Monkey, and BS Player Pro.

Hi Hawk, thanks for replying to my post.

Can you expand on "enable 'tags'?" I don't know anything about tags or even if it is software or hardware oriented.

I also had an ASUS LightScribe but it only lasted about 2 days and then stopped working. I wound up returning it after poor response from ASUS tech support. Current I have the SH-S223Q drive from Samsung. While I'm having problems burning audio CD's this drive consistently makes the LightScribe label.

For label making I use "Acoustica CD Label Maker" and I'm quite happy with their product.

I used to use Nero as my burning software of choice but it seems their software has become bloated (trying to be all things to all formats) and less intuitive to my old eyes.

I have Media Monkey but only the free versions so can't burn CD's. I've been reluctant to purchase it as it ruined a few of my MP3's when I tried to use the volume leveling feature.

Windows Media Player doesn't support CD-Text which I found very odd.

I'll take a look at BS Player Pro and see if it meets my needs.

I'm not a real fan of Real Player since I've had the problems stated in my original post but it may not be a RP problem since I can burn to a "regular" or non-LightScribe CD.

It would be easier if my problems were more specific.

I'll post any meaningful discoveries to this post.

OK, I think it could be a bit unpredictable here.
It may depend very much on your setup and equipment that you are using.
Windows Media Player 10 & 11 if you are connected to the Internet while Ripping a CD to MP3 will enter the Name of the Album and the Artist and names of the tracks into the Library.
In my case on my Micro HiFi I have to enable ID3 (that is what Grundig call it) and when I play MP3's it displays all the information, but in my Car the Player does not and I don't have the option to enable. Playing a original CD is not displaying anything except Track # and also a copy of the CD will only display Track#. So for me and I have spoken to a in law he has confirmed to me that it is the same with him. My MP3 player will also display Title Artist and name of track.
So unfortunately I can not give you any better advice.

    ID3 Tag definition by Wiki

I'm familiar with ID3 tags. In fact I even have an ID3 Tag Editor. I believe ID3 Tags are unique to MP3 files but it is explained much better and in great detail at this Wiki link.

It's the CD Text, which is different from ID3 Tags (metadata), that is used by the MP3 players that I'm familiar with to display song and album titles as well as "other" text.

I looked at the burners you use and found no joy. I'm still relying on Real Player for my CD Text and have resigned myself to having LightScribe burners being flaky and unreliable.
