Leave the cover open and check that all the fans are spinning freely. It sounds like it has a heat problem. Is it just one beep?

It may possibly be the power supply. See if you can borrow another power supply for testing.

nerdy you won't get a display until you put in RAM.

If the processor is gone, you won't hear anything.

How many monitor cable slots are there on the back of the PC? Have you tried another monitor or another cable?

There's no harm. You don't need an AGP card to test. Any PCI or AGP card would do.

There are two types of computer that tend to have heat problems. Laptops and the micro towers (the ones that use laptop components). Both lack the cooling capacity to work BOINC long term.

There are some basic precautions that everyone needs to take. Blow the dust out of the computer occasionally. Make certain that all the fans keep working.

There are three options for keeping your computer cooler if just keeping it blown out doesn't work. BOINC has a built in CPU usage fraction. Typically a setting of 80 to 90% works for most laptops. This setting does NOT work correctly on multi CPU systems. BOINC also has a setting to limit the number of CPUs in use. This does NOT work on single CPU systems. The latest version of BOINC has added a setting for a % of CPUs. This is supposed to work on both. There are also third party CPU limiters that can be used to limit the fraction of time that BOINC runs. These are a bit of a pain as they require you to set up a policy for each executable.

Remove any added hardware, disconnect all the drives, even disconnect the keyboard and mouse and see if there is any change.

Read in the motherboard manual for any troubleshooting suggestions and look for FAQs at the manufacturer's website. Look in the manual for how to "Clear the CMOS ".

It might just be at the end of it's lifespan.

    Matt
