I installed a scanner that was for use on windows 98 by using program compatibilty wizard on X P 2nd. The program installed using colar quality = to
8 bits. the scanner did not work so I uninstalled it. Now when I go to control panel, appearance and themes and set color 16 or 32 bits it will change.
However, after I power down and reboot the color reverts back to 8 bit.
I have removed all files, driver, hardware, associated programs I do not know
how to overcome this fix. Hope you can help. tks

Sounds like your graphics drivers have become corrupted - I would uninstall them through Add/Remove Programs - look for graphics software relating to your graphics card - then reinstall.

Moved to Hardware with title edit.

OK - start with posting the make and model of your computer, e.g. Dell Dimension xxxx

Right - there are 3 drivers available at Dell - please post the graphics info from .....

Control Panel > Display > Settings tab > Advanced button > Adapter tab ....

Chip type and Memory size, please.

You only require the driver for the Rage 128 32 Mb as I posted above - the first one on the list - of the other 2 drivers one is for the 16 Mb version of the graphics and the other for a completely different ATI card.

I suggest you do the following - in this order .....

Right click > My Computer icon > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager > Display Adaptors - expand by clicking on the + sign.

Right click on the ATI graphics listed > Properties > Driver tab > Roll back driver - test.

If the problem remaind repeat the above, but this time select Uninstall driver, reboot and test

If no change run the driver you downloaded - the first one in the list. Follow the instructions above to uninstall the driver before running the downloaded driver file.

PeteC I have been thru all the steps you listed to no avail . On one step I did not shut down the computer when told to do so, thinking that on the reboot the same file might be reinstalled. this did not work. One sidlite to all of this I saw a notice on the task bar that
new hardware was here and listed the new file however I could not download it.
Sorry to say but I am at a loss

Sorry for the delay in responding .....

If you have a backup of your data - always advisable, see if you can use System Restore to restore the computer to a date prior to loading the scanner.

Pete C, Well what can I say, except that I am much chagrin. The problem I have ask help for is
almost laughable if you had not spent so much time on it.
After I had reinstalled X P the first log on was OK. to test I shut down and powered up there it was the screen was in low color. During the reinstall a new user was created and
was displayed on the start up I clicked on this and the color was back
to normal. Explain? Must be there was only one user when I installed the scanner, which required the low color setting, the computer being such an accommododating
giant set the color for this user.
Iam sorry for all the time and effort you gave please forgive me.
PS. there is a good scanner for sale cheep

Don't fret :) we're here to help if we can - glad to hear that you seem to have resolved the problem.

If all is well a post mortem on how, why, etc this situation arose is not required ;)
