I cannot access any "drives" from "My Computer" or from
shortcuts of those drives..Only way to get into the drive
is to go to start>run>Drive letter which will open the drive.

Also can't create a "restore Point" using system restore.
Says reboot and try again which doesn't work.

TIA [Email address edited to avoid possible spamming]

    Hi Steve

When clicking on a drive icon in "my computer" nothing
happens except my USB thumb drive works.
The drive icons I have on my desktop do NOT work..The
cursor changes as if it's trying to open...but nothing.

System restore is as same as posted above..I've re installed
system restore but nothing, except losing my old restore
    points...Thanks

Download and install Dial_A-Fix. Run it and click the green arrow on the opening page. Cleck GO and give it time to complete. Help it along with the time zone setting verification. It will take a few minutes to complete.

    Reboot and check for effect.

    Get Dial-A-Fix Here.

Do you have TweakUI? If so, it has a listing under My Computer > Drives where you can uncheck any drive to hide it in the display of My Computer. If you don't have it, it might pay to get it and see if there are any drives unchecked. It's a long shot but I can't think of anything else beyond a repair install, which is a bit of trouble.

If you are comfortable looking in the Registry, go to the following key and see what numerical value data is listed under the Dword value listing for NoDrives. It should be all zeroes.

    Code:
    HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2857422465-927890586-840360825-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Any number other than zero in that value data will hide some particular drive in My Computer but it will still be accessable through the Run Window command. For example, 79 00 00 00 will hide the D, E, F, and G drives. 7D 00 00 00 will hide the C, D, E, F, and G drives. And so it goes with the hex values.

    Hi Surfedude2

Thanks for the reg. info..Everything was ok there..all zeros.
Also tried Tweakui several days ago..nothing
I have found that I can right click on a desktop icon or
one of the drives in "my computer" and then click
explore and the drive will open..strange that I cannot
just click in an icon like other apps.
Also tried re-installing system restore again..no joy.

    Hi RSINFO

I have done many scans and have McAFee V.Protectiion on this new install of XP Pro SP#3. I'll keep trying scans..
Also I get this error with a circled red X whenever I
double click on one of The SCSI drives listed in "My Computer ":
Windows cannot find 'RECYCLER\S-1-2-83-100021710-100022187-100024653-3705.com'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.
    Any Ideas ?

That's a sure sign of malware. Unfortunately McAfee alone is not enough. You need different programs & techniques to get rid of these pesky things.

Post in Malware & Virus section with required details.

    Good luck.

    Opening Drives

Still can't open drives from shortcuts on desktop and from
"my computer ".I've found that I can right click the icon
and select "open" or "explore" from the pop up menu and the drive will open. I can also open the drive by
going to start>run>drive letter. BTW how does one remove items from the right click pop up menu ?
    TIA,
    ramjet
