I am using Seamonkey version 1.8.20081.20416. OS is W-XP. I don’t know what I could have done to cause this but starting a few days ago every time I open a new Seamonkey browser window my mail window opens up and checks for new mail. For every new Seamonkey browser window I have a new mail window. I have checked every setting I can find and have not come up with anything to prevent this from happening. Is there a mail or Seamonkey preference I am missing? How can I stop this from happening? Thanks. TRoof

You are giving info. about your SM which are not quite correct, but it appears that you have SM1.1.14. Honestly, I never heard of the issue you have, especially the way you describe it. You are either a lousy shot clicking, accitentally, on the Mail icon or the gremlins have taken over your computer. This is one case when it behooves to uninstall Seamonkey, and then reinstall it.

Thanks Westside. I did give the wrong product version which is 1.1.14. What I gave was the file version. Haste makes waste.

I can't describe it any other way. Open SM browser and the mail window opens and checks for new mail. With the SM browser window and mail window open if I click on the SM icon again to open a new window a new mail window opens and checks for new mail. No matter how many SM browser windows I have open, if I open a new SM browser window a new mail window opens.

I am not that bad of a shot. Mail is nowhere near the SM icon.

If I uninstall SM and reinstall SM what will I lose in the process?

I will wait until the solution magically appears before I go the uninstall route. If someone else had the same problem and resolved it I hope they see this plea for help and have the gremlin killer I need.

Not sure HOW this gets set......but
Open config editor (about:config) in location bar.
    Filter on:
    general.startup.mail
This SHOULD be "default" = "false "
If it is "user set" (bold type)= "true "...
    Then right click entry....reset

    Next:
    Filter on:
    general.startup.browser

This should be "default" = "true "

If it is NOT, right click entry and "reset "

    Close and re-start SM...

Does this fix the problem ?

    regards:captjlddavis

    After somemore digging....
    Edit->Preferences->Appearance.....
    Right side ......TADA

    Hi troof,

Just out of curiosity, in Edit | Prefs, under Offline & Disk space, is "send unsent messages" or "download messages" ticked?

Or, when your in the e-mail side, what is "check for new messages" set to?

Or, as captjlddavis says, is the right side of "Appearance" set to "Navigator "?

Thanks for the replies. Gremlin exterminated. I did reinstall seamonkey as you suggested Westside and I also checked the preferences one more time. As it turned out I think the problem was in the SM Edit/Preferences /appearance. Capt, I think this is what you had in mind. Not sure what TADA means. Both Navigator and mail and news groups were active. This is what was causing the mail window to open the same time as the SM browser. I have no idea how that got changed but with the mail and news groups unchecked everything is back to normal. Don't know how I missed it before. Probably a case of over thinking it. So simple.
    Thanks everyone. - TRoof
